Report: TV News Contributes To Stereotypes Of Latinos
DECEMBER 11TH, 2003
The nation's Hispanic population is being marginalized when it comes to television news coverage, according to a new report by a journalism group.
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists says that in 2002, the evening newscasts on CNN and the three major networks reported just 120 stories about Latinos. That's out of some 16,000 stories aired in all, or less than 1 percent.
Of those stories that were about Latinos, the report says, the majority were about crime and illegal immigration.
The report says the lack of positive coverage contributes to stereotypes about Latinos as criminals and as people living in poverty.
