I read a post a while back and I can't remember who it was or where to locate it but it was talking about the politics behind freestyle. Like why things were the way they were with race and sales and production. But they also hit up on about sex and gender.

It's impossible not to notice that the overwhelming majority of the performers are female vocalists. So for a long time I always thought females dominated freestyle. But if that was true, there would be female producers also right?

When you talk about the "Queen of Freestyle", there are so many candidates that people throw out additional terms like princess or goddess so that they can ultimately name a few artists as queen. lol Then when u get to the "King", most people have no problem listing just one choice. Real quick! lol

I don't like to compare other "pop" music to freestyle because it's really not relevant BUT, in hip-hop and rock, u got many female producers. And those two genres are male dominated no doubt. So it would seem that in freestyle, where women are in such high demand that women would have the power. But none of them really do.

It's pretty safe to say that without women, there would be no freestyle. But how much control do they have over the music? I post this because there has to be a reason. I imagine the answer to this question will be pretty interesting if answered by any of the female performers that are members of this site.

Also if your the person who posted a while back on a similar issue, come back and drop some more science! :stoned

Actually, I think this is the case in most musical genres, not just freestyle. Whether it's rock, country, hip-hop, or whatever, the vast majority of producers have always been male. It's not just Freestyle.

Why is this the case?
Well, it's probably just straight numbers. Most producers are also musicians. If you look at the music industry in general, there seem to be a lot of females who can sing (Mariah, Whitney, Britney, etc)but aren't necessarily musicians. But if you look at their backup bands, the musicians are usually like 90% male.

Therefore,
more male musicians = more male producers

As for why there are more male musicians? You got me. :confused

I feel u, but Hip-hop & Rock music have always been dominated by males. There ARE more male musicians in Rock & Hip-hop. But even now, more females pulling forward in Hip-hop & R&B especially, some even produce tracks for or manage male acts.

So it would seem like in freestyle, where it's nothing but females, that they would have the opposite effect on the business side or at least have an easier time if they wanted to take part in that side.

And yeah I always wonder why TKA & George Lamond were the only male acts to really make it past a debut. Could it be that it's harder for a male act to make it in freestyle?
