The Convo
Eyes wide and full of despair
She asks herself does he really care?
He sits motionless face without expression
blankly staring not expecting a confession.
She asks- Do you remeber the way you used to look at me,
Do you remember making love for hours on end?
She waits but, no reply.
I remember the way you looked at me, I never thought that look
would fade,
I never thought my heart could ache from the hollowness in your eyes
or the emptiness in your face.
Whiping the tears she hated them even as the fell, smoothing them over her cheeks till they disappeared.
How can she be so week, why is she crying, it was never meant to
be this way?
I never meant to hurt her, not for a second,
I got in to deep and I'm learning a lesson.
I never said I loved her, I only made love
I never promised forever, she wouldn't give up.
My silence must have convinced her that the feeling
was mutual
Now I don't know what to feel, I'm lost and the ache in my
stomach is unusual
"I never made any promises, I thought we had an arrangement
I didn't lie or play a game, I never offered an engagment.
Why is this so suprising, I thought you were accepting
Now your hurt and to apologize seems the only direction."
His voice made her flinch, she hadn't expected him to say a word
But what he said deepened the pit inside not beleiving what she heard
I can't understand how he can be so cold, what we had seemed
special enough, I thought he wanted me the way I did him
How can everything in my body have lied to me, the signals
I must've misread.
This man who warmed my skin with a simple graze of his fingertips
the man I waited by the phone for, the man I ran out the door for
Can't possibly be the man I adore, he can't be the man that filled me with yearning and asked me for more.
"It just can't be" stunned by her words not realizing she'd spoken out loud.
"What" he asked half accusing have questioning, wanting to escape the conversation and its route.
"Don't you feel anything for me, would you walk away so easily, would you walk out that door never to return?".
Feeling light headed wishing she'd just been accepting, never questioning but it was to late and her eyes began to burn.
He saw the tears biulding in her eyes, they looked like watery glass
and he hated was it made him feel
This can't be happening, I care for her but, love was not part of the deal, this is so unreal.
Not sure if he really would walk away
not sure if he wanted to stay
Afraid to let this good women go
he'd been burned before and the truth is,
he didn't really know
I never bargained or gambled with you
I made no secrets about myself
Would you make me promise you something
I'm not sure of, do you need me to choose?
At a loss for words a ball formed in her throat
raw an dry she felt the cry yearning to come out
Slight and small quivers broke on her lips
she closed her eyes feeling her heart shatter
things may never be the same but his choice mattered.
"I can't go on this way, I can't go on wondering and waiting for the day you might feel the same,
I can't lay alone nights expecting you to show
I promise you I place no blame."
She moved across the room in slow steps the wanting desperation gleaming in her eyes
She sat down next to him scared and afraid of what might come
whatever it was, it would have to be tonight
He was ready to let this go in the darkness that overcame the room
the unsteady mask he wore wearily falling filling with gloom
She placed her hand on his, her face pleading so many things she wanted to say
She watched him bite his lip nervously rocking back and forth
suddenly he moved his hand away.
"This isn't what I wanted, not like this, I guess I wanted things to remain the same
I don't know for how long or even if that it would have lasted this long, but things change,"
His movement stung her like a slap on the face
What did he mean "things change"
Don't I deserve to be loved
I've been so giving, her body ached with pain
she felt it just then, things would never be the same
He knew he'd hurt her but his movement was involuntary
He wanted to hold her, comfort her but this was scary
He knew that love had hurt before,
he wasn't ready to bare his soul once more
Every thing given would be taken away
maybe not today or tomorrow but someday
"I don't know what to say" He wanted to run
He didn't wan't to see her face
See her shaken and know that he'd cause
her heart to ache
Slowly he arose
It was time for this
to come to a close
He put his coat on and took the keys
out of his pocket
She removed her robe and looked down
as she removed the locket
She stood frail
held out her hand
he held out his
she placed the locket
in his hand
He shut his eyes, shaking his head softly
He'd given her this gift, but what she wanted
was more costly
Her hand grazed his for a moment
for a split second he thought of holding on
but, the ride was over he had to move on
he crossed her on the way to the door
she followed behind like the times before
he extended his arm dropping the extra key on the table
She felt her knees weeken, wanting to speak but was unable
he looked back and inhaled deeply exhaled slow
She watched him walk out and prayed he didn't go
closing the door she leaned her back against
the cold iron surface
sliding down on the other side with his hands
he clasped them around his face
moving down to the floor she finally cried out her
body ached
hearing her cries on the other side he was so ashamed
gently stretching her hand to the small table reaching for his key
she held it in her palm
she layed down on the floor pressing the key to her chest
not beleiving he was truly gone
he wanted to move but was paralyzed
he couldn't shake the image of her loving eyes
couldn't shake the sound of her cries-------------
