Girls with high-fiber diets are less likely to experience the early onset of menstruation, according to University of Toronto researchers.

Girls who consume more fiber can decrease their risk of beginning their periods too early by as much as 50 percent, according to the study that was recently published in the journal Public Health Nutrition.

Malcolm Koo, a professor in public health sciences at the university, found that the risk of early periods for girls who consumed more than 25 grams of dietary fiber a day in the form of cereals, whole grains, vegetables and fruit was about half that of girls who had less than 18 grams of fiber a day.

Koo studied the role of dietary fiber and its link to the onset of menstruation. The study, which took place from 1992 to 1996, involved 637 pre-menstrual girls in Ontario between the ages of six and 14. In the study, the age of menstrual onset ranged from 8.5 to 15.6 years, with a median age of 13.6.

Estrogen, a hormone that develops and maintains female characteristics, is known to bind with fiber in the body, Koo said. Girls with diets higher in fiber may be expelling more estrogen, which is linked with a later menstrual onset. Koo also found that girls who consume higher amounts of monounsaturated fats in their diet (such as olive and canola oil) also experience later onset of menstruation

this reminds me of a past gf it was along distance relationship and for some strange reason she had her "friend" when ever we got together

LOL Coro..that sounds wonderful, but not when it is set, I have no kids during that time, the dad takes them for vacation, so that my time alone, with no work no kids...the others come wiht the kids...so im stuck ...🙁

mitchell...yeah I know you can do it with the pill, but if you are not on pills, will it work if you start now????...

LOL Dayer....

betty, it probably will. they always tell you to start the pill after your period. i think if you started taking it now, your period would get all messed up and you probably wouldn't get it for awhile. most of the time, if you ask your doctor, they'll tell you how to do it.
good luck!! 😉
