SLIPPERY CONDITIONS-Be aware of ice and snow conditions on the roadways and sidewalks.
* Always be aware of your walking surface, walk at a slower pace and always avoid walking on ice when possible.
* Make sure your car is winter-worthy. Have your brakes and battery checked and get them replaced if necessary.
* Review your driving techniques. Learn the right way to apply your brakes and handle skids on slippery roads.
* Be prepared for trouble. Keep an emergency kit containing a flashlight, scraper with brush, tow chain, jumper cables, shovel, bag of salt or kitty litter in your car.
*See and be seen. Keep your windshield wipers, defroster lights in good working order. Before you begin your trip, always completely clean your car of snow and ice. Snow or ice left on your cars hood or roof can blow back onto your windows and/or blow onto other cars which could cause an accident.
* Use the right type of tires with good thread. If you're driving in deep snow, you may want to put on snow tires or chains.
* Clear your path, both front and back. If there is snow in front of your tires, turn them from side to side, then move off slowly. If the vehicle doesn't move, don't gun the engine, the tires will only spin and dig into the snow deeper.
* Keep your cool. If your car stalls, don't panic and don't try to walk unless you know help is within walking distance. If you stay in your car, you have some protection from the cold until help arrives.
* Take it easy. Do everything-accelerating,braking, and steering in moderation.
