as many may already know
party 93.1 in miami s having a show on the 4th of july.line up includes rockell, amber,bt and others.
but there is a rockell performance people might not know about in the least of places in miami.
see the story is like this.
I wanted to start breaking Freestyle in the core gaymarket in florida. why?..cuz it is the scene that has the stronghold in miamis house scene. dj getting projects sigend to labels like *69 and all that.. in return, those labels dominating the dj scene in miami with progressive house or circuit. I saw how in the late 80's and early 90 people shifteed from freestyle to house. and the core of all this started mostly in the gay market.
somebody told me that that market is so fickle, that a breaks artist , non the less a freestyle artist would never be able to perform in such a club, with breaks.
(yeah, i know gioa pefformed in some, but she is not a current breaks artist and that new material isnt freestyle. in fact its even too slow for todays current house...she is no kim english,,,although i still love her as an artist).
so i booked d'luna the china doll in alot of gay venues to prove a point. our last show in ozone was a success. a lil hidden club in south miami, formerly known as club manhattans in the 80's.
we promoted well, even got the back cover of the florida magazine outlook.
(before d'luna i did the same with another artist called vanessa conde from new jersey) who they also loved.
because of the success of CHINA DOLLS (jellybean) in a venue that once only catered to house music...
now the owner was aware that party 93 was having theer concert and wanted more freestyle and breaks artist in his club..(add to the fact that the club is the only latin gay club (that is actualy has a good vibe)
so he took advantage and now Rockell will be at Ozone on saturday the 6th of july.
other clubs are aware of this and are thinking of the same direction..freestyle breaks artist in gay clubs...where house music had prevailed for many years.
if this keeps up, the strong hold of house music inmiamis gay scene will looseen at a time when the prodomination of breaks in orlando and tampa is said to start pouring down on miami more than before (as aposed to the trance and house stronghold).
why is this important, well , due to the fact that alot of people, label owners, radio personalities, executives, even those who run the winter music conference are mostly gay. they see what is going on and are aware of the changes.
lots of politaical pull from that market...which is why stations like party want to target that market next also.
and if anyone ever learned from promoter jeffrey sanker...and like i say
...."at the end of the rainbow, there is always a pot of gold waiting."
so if this works inmiami, im sure the same can work in new york.
it would be harder, but freestyle always loved a challenge.
anyway, Rockell will be at ozone july 6th,saturday... our whole freestyle community in miami will also show up and support. a mixed crowd is expected.
and dont forget to catch china dolls(d'luna) and robyn fox this saturday june 29 in tampa,fl at club twilight in ybor city.
