New Policy At Rhythm Radio

Hi everyone. Jack Cordell, the new station manager/ music director for Rhythm Radio, has asked me and the other DJ's to post the following message on all dance music and freestyle message boards. It is about a new policy at Rhythm Radio (www.rhythmradio.org) "Your Dance Music Paradise:

As of this week, there is a new policy in effect at Rhythm Radio. We will ONLY play new releases from artists or record labels that help to support the station financially. In other words, those who make a donation of some kind to the station, will have their music added to the daily playlists for at least a month. Those who do not make any donations, will not have their music added. Therefore, artists and record labels should no longer email us requests to play new music, unless they intend to support our station financially. The only exception to the rule is when a "big name" artist puts out a new record. Big name artists such as Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Judy Torres, who have already had long strings of hits, will always be played on our station.

As you probably know, most internet radio stations are completely non-profit and the station managers and DJ's do not get paid for their time, effort, or money. They do what they do only because they love music and broadcasting. Since, the costs of broadcasting a station like Rhythm Radio are quite high, we rely heavily on donations from friends, listeners, companies, recording artists, etc. to help fund the broadcasting. Live365 now allows all internet radio stations to accept donations to help fund the stations, and that's exactly what we are doing in order to keep the station running.

Is this "PAYOLA" from Rhythm Radio??
Asking artists to pay to get their music played??
That's just NOT right!!

Call it what you want

Call it what you want. We call it accepting donations. I personally like the new policy, and I like our new station manager, Jack Cordell. He brought the station back when it was about to be totally abandoned by the station owner.

Yes that is clear-cut Payola...Its one thing to accept promotional material for a new artist (ie CD's or T-shirts for givaways, and promotions) but the Pay-to-play is a HUGE NO-NO on broadcast stations. Our company recently had a giant 50 page booklet about accepting promotional material and bribbs from Promoters, handlers, and the middle-men that used to be the norm. One of our stations gotta around it by actually announcing that the song you are about to hear was paid for by label "X" (just like a infomercial or regular spot) That is completely legal because you are not trying to fool the listeners into think the song is being played because its good.

My 2 cents is this; if you value your listeners and the sound of the station, you will not play a record because someone is bribbing you. That is the responsiblity of the Music Director or Program Director, to use his personal judgement of what music the listeners will want to hear and how the station should sound. I have seen lots of CD's in pretty packages, along with DVDS and T-shirts end up in the Round file because the record just plain sucked. Its a 2-way street, if an artist see's that your are not playing your music, they will work harder to try and come out with something more appeasing to better suit your audience, or else they will go hungry.

Thats my helpful insight....If I were you rhythmradio (which I am in the same boat) I would look to get help from sponsers or investors (maybe like Public Broadcasting)
