I had a question for you people cuz i was wondering.....
Me and D'luna the china doll have been touring all over the country, we have done shows in california (san fransisco is next by the way),texas, the southern states, florida (like crazy) and even in areas like new jersey atlantic city.
Everywhere we go......EVERYWHERE!!! its like a domination of breaks. Breaks ,trance and progressive house. These scenes all recognize that the roots and history of breaks is in electrofunk and freestyle records. therefore they play mad freestyle everywhere.
they play and dance to classic records and mix it with the new breaks records etc.....
all these cities where also huge freestyle cities back in the day, mostly cuz that whole area also had large latin populations (one of many factors), which is what we grew off of. it was (and is) our R&B.
I see that the older generations opening the new generation to old skool freestyle records and the new generation opening the older to the new breaks and progressive house remixes of freestyle records.
I see everywhere a huge freestyule and 80's revival (not only in breaks, but in house and goth and other scenes...a huge 80's revival that is all efecting all styles of music and ways of dress).
I really dont hear much of any new york based neoFreestyle/ breaks artist....or know of any of them touring or performing (i asked dozens clubs and radio stations). Everyone says that new york is still prodominantly married to house. danny tenaglia, victor calderone etc..
that there is no breaks scene or anything in demand for it.
so my question is, if there is such a large market for freestyle, of all places new york.why isnt new york thriving like miami, tampa and other areas? why arent the breaks artist performing with the old skool artist. why dont the old skool artist let a breaks artist open up for them?
sometimes, not all the time, we here in miami see the new york's freestyle scene isolate themselves from other scenes. especially now, when we have people in the house and Circuite scene remaking freestyle records like information society's "running", and theres alot of others..."Din da Da" the kevin aviance version...
i just heard a record out now, where they sampled the "You Feel It, YOu LIKE IT" off of amaretos "clave rocks". Even drag queens are dressing all 80's and performing freestyle songs.
what is going on in new york, that its not working or its just not big, like it is everywhere else.
Other scenes and djs from other scenes, where prodominantly freestyle back in the day. so they deep inside do like it. they respect that the freestyle scene is still around as a community and duking it out. but all the events are always the same people (who i love dearly), but the djs and industry question that .
The breaks scene and movement has given freestyle since the early mid 90's many waves of artist. we called it trip hop. everyone was againts it "THATS NOT FREESTYLE!!!". then all the traditional artist came out with trip hop songs or part of a trip hop compilation.
Now its called breaks and its the same thing over again..."its not freestyle!!" . In the meantime artist from europe are remixing their trance songs to electro freestyle breaks, while we sit here and scratch our head and wonder why is Diana fox's breaks remix of "Running on" empty on the PRESENT DAY radio and clubs and not records from our scene.why arent new freestyle artist on the radio?
a record i do have respect for is Rockell's latest record, where she had various versions, but the version with the Circuit house mixed with the breaks was the !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ing bomb. that turned heads everywhere.
and there are one or two here and ther that make noise, jocelyne enriques, when she came out with "when I get close to you".it had a huge impact in all the clubs with its house version..forcing the djs to turn the record to the breaks/freestyle version.
but one or two records aint gona do it. we need a revolution!!!
my question...
whats up with all this.whats up with new york????
anyway, let me stop writing, cuz then someone is going to get mad at me and say "why you writing a column in my website"lol.
anyway peace!!!
