While many freestyle artists of the past have abandoned freestyle to do different music only (though I don't mind them trying other stuff as well, as long as they don't abandon/dis/or run from freestyle), Stevie B is an artist that I think deserves props for staying true. If you haven't heard his new album, check it out, yes it is freestyle! I think he knows something that some other artists failed to realize... just by leaving freestyle and singing rap, r&b, pop, reggaeton, etc, doesn't mean you're going to automatically score a hit album. In fact other than a fraction of the freestyle artists that have done anything even slightly significant outside of freestyle, how many of them have put out something and failed big time? I mean like selling nothing? Just about everyone! I applaud Stevie B and his camp for continuing with freestyle, I bet his new freestyle album will sell more than any of the other artists albums, before it even makes it to the stores! I stopped by the booths at Arco Arena at the Freestyle Explosion last night and saw the CD's they were selling. Stevie B's CD's looked as though they were flying off the shelfs, and one of the agents selling them had said she had sold a lot of them. When other artists try doing only other types of music and sell nothing, maybe they should think of this... they had lots of fans, fans of their freestyle music. When you abandoned them you lost tons of them. What people like Stevie B and others who have done big in freestyle are doing are catering to the sizeable amount of fans that they already have. Trying to sell the type of music you are known for to thousands of people who are into that music and fans of yours can be a lot better than trying to sell hip hop, r&b, pop, reggaeton, rock, etc to a couple of 12 year olds lucky enough to come across your CD who have never heard of you before. Stevie B selling to the concert-goers is one good way to get things started, they have a plan, better to sell to a potential audience of 8-10,000 at these concerts than have a single CD sitting in a store in a music genre that you were never known for. Now again, nothing against those trying to do other types of music, they have the right to and might create some good stuff, I would even try the occasional non-freestyle song if I was making music, but to those who leave it for good and disassociate themselves from it, well think about it real hard again. Just something I've been meaning to say.
P.S. One of my favorite songs on the new Stevie B album, is the non-freestyle song "Old School Party." Good stuff and getting spins on Rhythm 105.9 as well as some big stations in Arizona and other places.
