Sarah Palin took aim at the makers of Fox's "Family Guy" series on Tuesday night, saying only "cruel, cold-hearted people" would make fun of the mentally disabled.
"Those in the special needs community truly are some of the most loving and compassionate people in the world," she said on Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor." "So why pile it onto them and make their lives even that much more challenging?"
The ex-Alaska governor - now a Fox commentator and possible 2012 presidential contender - was responding to a "Family Guy" episode Sunday in which a teen boy is smitten with a girl who has Down syndrome.
Characters in the cartoon show, known for its over-the-top, crude humor, mock the girl. Later, when asked about her parents, she says, "My mom's the former governor of Alaska."
Palin's youngest child, Trig, has Down syndrome.
Her teenage daughter, Bristol Palin, said on her mom's Facebook page that writers of the "pathetic cartoon show" were nothing but "heartless jerks."
A Fox spokeswoman said the network had no comment on the criticism.
Advocates for people with Down syndrome also railed against the episode yesterday.
"If your audience doesn't get that you're trying to make a political statement, they just take it at face value and use it as fodder for their own mean-spirited attacks," said David Tolleson, head of the Atlanta-based National Down Syndrome Congress. "Some of what was depicted was hurtful and stereotypical."

i though in alaska they only got one channel, if this is true then i guess they air family guy, and the one network doesn't think it is cruel putting money in there pocket.
