After finding this site, I've been inspired to finally produce and record some freestyle songs that I wrote years ago. I'd like to release them if I could in the future.

Anyway let me know what you think of my first ever attempt at producing freestyle. I'm sick this week, so I couldn't lay down vocals (my singing voice is shot). But, I did include a "vocal guide" in the form of a "bell" sound. Once the vocals are recorded, I'll lower the bell in the mix.

I know I haven't been here for a while but I love this thread. It's a topic that I have often thought about. In my opinion Jellybean's "Mexican is the 1st Freestyle song. It was released at a time when dance music started changing. Disco Died and a new & exciting form of dance music arrived. Follwed by "Let The Music Play", Nairobi's "Funky Soul Makossa" & Xena's "On The Upside". These records (remember those?) started it all. I don't think Freestyle has died or gone underground. I think it's changed, it has been "adopted" by mainstream pop. If you listen closely to The Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, etc. You hear the same beats, Keys, and arrangements WE used. What's missing is the "Latin Flava", and the sampling WE used back in the days. What's the difference between Britney and Fascination? Or Cristina & Judy Torres? If you ask me it all boils down to that "Latin Flava". I've been down on Freestyle for the last 2 years or so. I even put my records (there's that word again) & my 1200's in storage. The newer Freestyle is pretty redundant, it's all using that same "planet Rock" beat now. The energy is different also. Back in the days, you used to be able to tell which artist made a song before a lyric was even sung. Now you can't. With all of that said maybe we are all wrong. Maybe the 1st Freestyle song was "Numbers" by Kraftwerk since that is the 1st song I know of that used that "Planet Rock" beat.

BTW I'm not looking to start a debate about all of this. Just sharing some opinions & observations. I have started to listen to Freestyle again, and I even like some of the newer stuff with the "Planet Rock" beat. I just wish, the newer artists would be alittle origional in their work.

Give it another try. I just checked it and it is working fine. Either that or click on the "Download" link.

Another thing, I could've sworn I posted this in the Production forum, but maybe I'm wrong.

That song is off the hook. Keep us posted on all your new stuff!! I like the bell!!
Thanks! My goal is to actually independently release a CD and have it and the singles available for purchase through ITunes, Rhapsody, Napster, Best Buy.com, etc.

I will however repost this single once the vocals are recorded. The bell will not be eliminated just lowered in the mix.

For LeeMiran,

how did you link your songs onto this website for download?
&
How do you put your songs on Napster (or any of the P2P's you've mentioned) to download for a fee?

I plan on doing the same thing and if it's no big thing to you to tell me how..

thx

@Infinit1 - It's no big thing

I have the mp3 file uploaded on some server space that I own. You could probably get some free serverspace as well (your ISP usually gives you some - read through their website on how to FTP your own files onto your server space).

Once the file is on your server space, you create a link in your post by first typing the wording of the link, like "Download". Then you press the "Create Link" button. A window will open requesting the url of the file or page you are linking. It should be somethink like:
Code:
http://www.myserverspace.com/mysong.mp3

The procedure to make your mp3 stream instead of directly download is similar. But instead of your link pointing to a ".mp3" file. Your link needs to point to a ".m3u" file, An m3u file is simply a text file (you can use notepad for this) which contains one line of text. That text will be the address of your mp3, like the code above. Save this text file with a m3u extention and upload that file to your server space. Make the "Stream this song" link point to the m3u file.

Go to www.cdbaby.com. They are an online distributor for independent artists. Look into their Digital Distribution arrangement. They have distribution rights with all the top music download services including iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, MSN, Sony's connect.com, MusicMatch, and Buy.com. I think the only big one that they don't have is Walmart.com's download service.

PEACE
