I was wondering what reasons do you feel the Music Industry in not in good shape?

What theorys do you think that can improve it.

My personal feeling to educate the public about the cons of downloading internet music. Teach them about the industry, and why it is important to buy legitimate copies.

Last night in the news, I had heard the People who own Tower Records are looking for buyers do to Online downloading and also because of online retailers.

What do you all think?

Downloading has alot to do with it but the INDUSTRY is to blame also. Some of the stuff they are putting out today should not even see the light of day! :crap

the only thing i dl is music that i have problems finding in stores
theres alot of stuff that gets released in europe but not here the rest of the mp3's are ripped from my own cd's

WELL IN MY OPINION, WHEN AN ALBUM IS RELEASED IT IS RUSHED AND MAYBE HAS 2 GOOD SONGS ON IT, AND THIS IS WHY SALES ARE SUFFERING..IT'S NOT LIKE IT WAS YEARS AGO..I TRUELY FEEL IF AN ALBUM HAS AT LEAST 6 BANGER TRACKS PEOPLE WOULD PURCHASE THE ALBUM...

Downloading is a big part of what's happening in the industry, but labels need to take responsibility for their part in that. If the prices were reasonable, people would seek to buy their music instead of downloading it. And, labels no longer release singles because they want to push album sales. Why would I buy an entire album when I only like one song? In the old days, we used to tape it off the radio. Now we download it from the internet. Is there a difference?

Radio stations pay ASCAP/BMI (Publishing) a certain fee to play songs on the air.
Taping it (cassette) is a analog form of recording. Basically from analog to analog, there will be a loss in generation. With digital copies(downloading/bottlegging), there isn't much of a loss and a person can make a crystal copy just as they would get if they bought it from the store over and over and over. Plus the people who made the song to the retailer gets no payment for their work and service.

Single sales can be profitable, but the cost of producing, manufactoring and marketings and finally selling' , most labels who make much from them.

An Album is like a book. A book of an artsist work. Each song is a chapter. You buy an album you truelly support the artist. The buying public can dicate what is being produced buy their buying habits.
For example, look at TV reality based shows, personally, I find them a piece of garbage cause it puts talented artists , writers, and people who worked hard in that industry out of business for a bunch of no name people who are not in industry (non union , much cheaper for companies to make and gain more profit) The public dicated that this is popular , now you have reality based shows in abundance.

The price of CD's is tough, cause the price cost is standard in the industry. I am not sure how much lower they can go mainly for smaller labels which cost of production is more to make per cd/single then a major label which produces bigger quanities. Personally I feel 9.99 -14.99 is fair.

sorry, for being so long, but I am a person who supports legitimatacy cause everyone deserves credit and get paid for their hard work and effort. =)

Unfortunately, that's why I download :crap

With today's technology the cost has gone up on everything from production to artwork for the cover. All this is done really fast. So people tend to download
instead of buying at a store. Now the store has to raise prices as well to cover his overhead. The MAJOR labels are closing down a little at a time and are doing more of a distribution for INDEPENDENT labels. A lot of people don't
want to sign with the MAJORS any more and instead try to do it themselves. This makes prices go up across the boards.
Downloading is so much easier and is done in the convenience of being at your house.
I guess you could say that downloading is the 21st century form of being a COUCH POTATO.

Not at all! I disagree with that. For me, it is just a matter of convenience and being able to get what I want when I want it without having to purchase something I am not entirely happy with.

Why buy a burger and fries when all you really want is the pickle?

Sophia, Why would you eat a burger and fries knowing how unhealthy it is. I understand the convenience of downloading, but try and find a record shop that let's you listen to the music first. These shops are out there, you just have to look for them. Ask one of your local DJ's
where to find them. They will know.By the way, I am a Nutritionist and
a Fitness Trainer. I don't eat fast food. You can eat the pickle, it has no calories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!lolouder

Yes, but think about this.....your will lose some sound quality no matter what (think about songs that cant be found on CD that are only availible on 12" or cassette).

WOW how in the world did I miss out on this topic!

A agree 100% with what SiameseSher posted, the turth is that it is the are many factors that our hurting the Industry, on all fronts, Radio, TV, both recording & distribution corporations.

The haert of the problem is Reality & Technology, the reality is that the current system is out dated, and goverments and corporations buying eachother out!

Goverments make laws on in regards to technology, and corporations fund the goverments champaign.

on one side you have the major corporation in control of the media (example Clear Channel: Radio,Television, outdoors, AOLTW: WEA,The WB T.V., People Magazine, CNN)
Reality & Technology
these major groups can't control Technology the way they once did, and both side are at war!

and its hurting everyone know!

I could go on, and on, but I gotta run

b bacl laters
