ST. LOUIS, United States (AFP) - Voters in Missouri overwhelmingly approved a proposal to amend the state's constitution to ban gay marriage, in a closely-watched referendum on what is shaping up to be a major social issue this election season.

The proposal had garnered about 70 percent of the votes with 75 percent of precincts reporting, with much of the support coming from conservative rural Missouri, according to the state's secretary of state's office.

The Midwestern state already has laws barring homosexual marriage, but grass-roots activists had lobbied for stronger protection for traditional marriage in the wake of a decision by the Massachusetts Supreme Court late last year that opened the door to same-sex unions in that state.

"People understand we have a wise public policy in Missouri and want to protect traditional marriage from possible legal challenges. People don't want to see in Missouri what happened in Massachusetts."

Because it SHOULD be legal everywhere. You cant help who you fall in love with & gays should have the same rights as straight people.

Well things don't always turn out the way that some ppl think they SHOULD be. So in that case if someone can't get married in the state that they live in than just go somewhere else. It's no biggie and the end result will be the same.

The only state where it is legal is Mass, and the House of Rep passed a measure that prevents the Supreme Court on ruling on this matter.

Example. TankTruck and I decide to get married. We go to Mass, and get the license. We then go to my homestate of NJ and say "This is a legal marriage license, you have to recognize it." the State govt can say, "We define marriage as between a man and a woman."

Normally, the next step for us would be to sue the state of NJ in the Supreme Court. The meassure passed by the House prevents the Supreme court from changing the states ruling, making the marriage license valid only in the state where it was issued.

For Tank and I to have the protections and benefits of marriage that straights have, we would be forced to leave family, friends, and careers behind and try to start over again in Mass.

Can't you just get married in Mass and than move/go back to the state you live in? I mean ppl go get married in Vegas all the time and they live in other parts of the country.

What he's saying is that because he and Tank are not male and female...the marriage wouldn't be recognized in any other state except Mass.

ditto

The marriage would only legally be recognized in Mass, which is complete BS

*Lives in Mass.*

They can ban marriage all they'd like.......but they can't take away the 7 years and 4 months my man & I have been together. That's more important to me than marriage. I really don't need a piece of paper to justify what we have.

I hear what you are saying, but it would be nice to have the legal protections that straight couples get when they marry.

I really don't think it's too much to ask for.

And now, some good news from Washington state!

Same-sex couples cannot be deprived of the right to legally marry in Washington state, a judge ruled Wednesday in a decision hailed as a powerful affirmation of equal rights for gay couples.

King County Superior Court Judge William L. Downing ruled in favor of gay couples who argued that Washington's law restricting marriage to one man and one woman violates the state constitution. In his decision, Downing singled out critics who consider such unions dangerous to children.

"The fact is that there are no scientifically valid studies tending to establish a negative impact on the adjustment of children raised by an intact same-sex couple as compared with those raised by an intact opposite-sex couple," Downing wrote.

He concluded that barring same-sex partners from marriage is "not rationally related to any legitimate or compelling state interest."

Chuck D - hang in there... eventually all states will pass the law of same sex marriages... it may take time but it will happen... Some people are just afraid of law changes and still stuck in the old traditional ways...

You know...I have to give props to the people at One Live To Live, because they are addressing this very issue in Marcie's storyline....that said, I find it very offensive the a !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!in court, that doesn't pay my rent, that doesn't know me, or what i go thru, has the power to deny my human rights as a gay man to marry. We need to vote a gay man or a lesbian into office....except just to !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the homophobes over, the person doesn't come out until AFTER he serves his 2 terms...better yet let's make it a lesbian...can you imagine the damage a pissed off dyke can do?....no terroristic country would want to !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with us! :cheers
