Kind of had a feeling this was going to happen, and today it became official. My job is experiencing some financial hardships, and the layoffs are starting to happen. It's been rumored that the night shift in my department was going to axed, and it happened, the 1:30-10pm shift is bye-bye. My department wants to keep me and move me to days, but since I can't be in 2 places at once, I'm going to have to take the layoff. :realsad I don't know what I'm going to. I'm hoping that by some chance the decision to do this is over ruled, but I guess that's denial. I guess time to go job hunting. It's frustrating cause I only have a little over a month left of school, and I know no other job will be as flexible with my hours as this job was.

dag girl I feel for you.

I wish they would lay me off. I'm tired of my job.

hopefully you will find something quick if not unemployment and finish school.

Being laid off sucks. I was laid off in Dec(thanks to George W. Bush). It's depressing but girl you cant let it get you down.Just know that things happen for a reason and something better will come.GOOD LUCK!!

damn girl i feel for you and i wish you much luck with your job hunting but like they say things happen for a reason so keep your head up :cheer

Thanks guys. I'm trying to stay positive and tell myself this happened for a reason and that something better will come along, but since the news was given today, it does have me a little depressed. I'll still have my weekend shift. but that's a severe paycut to go from getting paid for 80 hours to a getting paid for 32, but I guess it's better than nothing.

And I feel a little better now that I vented. Thanks for the encouragement and support. I'll keep ya'll posted on how things go.

Hey Meggy, I'm sorry to hear about your lay off. I know you'll find a good job sweetie. Hopefully little Satan can keep you company.LOL :dancepuff

Megan, I'm here with you... I was stressing about it, but it was making me crazy... they said secretaries were going to go too. So far I haven't heard anything, but when the times comes, I'll collect and spend more time with my kids and then look for work. It's getting closer to the nicer weather so take advantage of it. I know the money is going to s*ck, but call Unemployeement. You might qualify for partial payments from them since you were originally full time - now part time. Check into it.

Good Luck!!!

Gina

Damn mama, keep your head up. They do say that when one door shuts on you, there's another door of opportunity that will open for you. Don't know if that helps but what can we do right? There is just so much we can't control. Hope things really work out for you in the best way possible.

Jenn, Jazzy, Mike and LaBetty...thank you guys for the encouragement and kind words! And Jazzy thanks for the link on idealist. I already have something on career builder, but didn't know about the other one. Thank you all!

Gina - we're kind of in the same boat here. Hopefully this doesn't effect you. I know on Thursday a bunch of unit secreteries got cut, and one of them was one of my friends who just got married 2 weeks ago. My department is trying to bump me to days, but its going to be tough cause of classes. I'm just going to start looking for other jobs, and if it works out here, fine, if not then it just means something better for me is out there.

And again, thank you everyone....it means a lot to me and you all are definitely helping me get through a tough time.

Update:
For those that were asking, the decision to let the night shift wasn't overruled, so it's a done deal. Last day(or night depending on how you look at it) is end of the month March 31. :sosad
Grrr, I really hope the bright light who thought up this plan realizes that this is going to backfire. It's not just my department, its hospital wide, and to reduce or completely cut the night shift is not a smart thing to do. I really can't wait till this blows up in adminitrations face.

sorry to hear of this Meg. what department at bayonne medical cntr do/did u work in?? y would they cut out the nght shift?? being that i am a patient there i wonder y would a hospital lay off nght time employees. dumb aholes.

i know what u are going thru just stay positive i was out a work for a year
got my current job after my unemployment ran out

I work in Health Information Services (formerly Medical Records) and they're cutting night shifts because of "financial hardships" and for the night shift, they have to pay a night differential, which is basically an added incentive to work nights. Now, I work nights not because of the incentive, but because that's the only shift I can work since I'm in school during the day. So the brilliant descision was made that by cutting and reducing the night shift, it will be money they can save by not having to pay the night workers the night differential. :rolleyes It's completely stupid if you ask me, and patient care is really going to suffer. What they should do is make the over paid CEO take a huge paycut, since he got us into this mess in the first place.

Thanks Ed! I'm trying to stay positive, but I keep getting the thought in my head that in 2 weeks, I'll be out of a job.

I'm sending out my resume to some places and I'm also using online sites, so I'm hoping that within 2 weeks, if I don't have another job lined up, I hope to at least have some interviews set up.

well as a patient there i am going to complain. this is really going to jeopordize patient care. its bad enough they can be neglectful during the day. if i have to go in the hospital again, i think i'll go to hoboken.

meg i hope you find a better job.

Meggy! Sorry to hear about this! 🙁 With you graduating so soon...couldn't you do the unemployment thing? Or is the cut in pay too much even with that? Not trying to be all up in your business but it seems to me that it would be better for you to do that IF it's beneficial as far as you not stressing durin these last few weeks of school.

Thanks Aim! They say everything happens for a reason, so I'm hoping the reason is that there is something better out there for me. Plus they also cut from night shift unit secretaries, RNs, PCPs, LPNs, so right there is a big comprise on patient care. Shoot, with all these cuts and all, if I had to go to the hospital, I definitely wouldn't want to come here now.

Yeah I thought about the unemployment, but since I was originally a part timer turned full timer, if I were to get unemployment, it would be based on my part time status, so it would be too severe a cut in pay. Now I also work as paramedic in the ER at St. Vincent's in the city, but I don't get paid cause it's volunteer that I do it, so yeah I'll still work there, but again no money, so I may have to end up leaving St. Vincent's too which I really would hate to do.

It's just going to be a tough couple of weeks. Thanks again all of you for the support and encouragement. It really means a lot to me, and it's helping to save what's left of my sanity.
