ok so KTU is supposed to be a rhythmic station right.
for this week they have 28 songs on their playlist...only 7 are dance records(9 if you count remix versions of whitney houston and luther vandross)
seeing stuff like this gives me flashbacks of hot 97 in 1993 :crap
we need a party 93.1 up in here

KTU is a rhythmic/top 40 based station...it is neither their duty nor their responsibility to fill up their playlist with all dance music. If they did, nobody would listen. They mix up dance music, R&B, commercial hip hop and ballads to make up thier playlist. Their entire recurrents catalogue is mostly dance music (freestyle, disco, 90's dance, etc)

Don't question the formula, because it obviously works. KTU has always adhered to this sort of structure, and our ratings are still great 7 years later

Stations like 95.3 in south florida are different. They are in an entirely different market and cater to an entirely different demograph, and their numbers are nowhere near KTU's. While they cater to a smaller, specified audience, KTU caters to MILLIONS of New Yorkers. It's hard to keep everybody happy, but I think Jeff and Skyy do a bangup job keeping our numbers what they are.

But if anyone has any suggestions, feel free to post them

u know that just aint true James... more dance music lovers in NY would listen

I can hear r&b & hip hop on a dozen other stations so KTU unfortunately is just another fish in that sea....

Just sayin there can be more of that stuff and less hip hop thats all..... :)

I feel the same way Sietz.

Not for nothing, didn't KTU have an hour during the day of just Freestyle???

Why can't they do that for us again?

only, make it from 1:00-2:00 so that we still have latino mix from 12-1.

:)

Am I losing my mind here...are you guys forgetting that you get 3 hours of freestyle every sunday night from 9-midnight. Does Judy's show and my mix count for nothing? Find me another major station that gives you 3 hours of nothing but freestyle. And as far as the 12-1 hour, you guys are totally misinformed. While the hour has traditionally always been a mixshowm it was NEVER designated to be a freestyle-only time. Usually its a disco mix, however sometimes it's freestyle, 80's crossover dance or "KTU classics" from the mid-90's.

I hate to break it to you guys, but any station in NY that played nothing but nonstop freestyle music and dance music would have a fraction of the audience that KTU has now. Remember, the majority of our listeners are NOT freestyle fanatics or dance music fanatics. It's people who also listen to Z and Power. Trust me guys, I don't pretend to be the authority on what goes on in programming, but I do know that a whole lot of research goes into what gets played and what doesn't. Like I said, we've had the same formula since the beginning and it still works. Florida is an ENTIRELY different market. It's like day and night compared to NY. What you see going on in Florida would not work here.

When KTU came back on the air they were rated # 1 for about a whole year.Their playlist rely heavily on Freestyle and dance music. As soon as Clear Channel bought out the station the programmers started dropping freestyle and adding more pop hits and club remakes of big records.Thats when they started slipping in the ratings. If Cox Broadcasting was to ever set up a party type station in NY they would take a big chunk of the KTU audience.I don't understand why KTU needs to compete with Z100 for the pop audience when they are both Clear Channel stations.Z100 has always had that market and does a good job already.KTU need to stick to dance, dance and more dance.

I understand this..I think Ktu plays enough freestyle as is beneficial to ratings. As for their formula..its a good formula..party 95 in orlando plays a good mix of dance/pop/Hiphop..and its good. KTU has the pop/top 40 element, but constantly passes up adding great dance records to rotation. Most of their dance is tired already. When they play commercial trance..it does well! why not add a little more? I understand this isnt orlando and theyve tried breaks before and it didnt do well. NY isnt geared towards breakbeat music because as you said its not florida. But theyve passed up so many good dance records..and they didnt used to do that in 1996 when they signed on. someone needs to breethe some new life into that station. I was surprised when they started playing "never" by the roc project..i hope they surprise me more int eh future.

I live in Boston, but I go down to NYC once a month and stay for the weekend.

The minute I hit 95 in Connecticut, I used to always program KTU. Always. This is going back circa 1996. I loved what they were playing back then. Totally Dance, totally different.

Now, it's been a little over two years now that I don't even bother setting my radio on KTU anymore. It's no longer "unique". It's just like every other radio station.

They got what they wanted from us (ratings), and changed everything around. I remember the "hype" surrounding the new KTU. And I'm sorry, three hours of Judy's show does not make up for it.

And another thing, you people up at KTU have Judy playing too many worn-out songs. Rather than continuing to play the old, shed some light on the new and play something different for once.

for me personally, i get real frustrated when they do start playing
some dance and then they go to a disco song...uuugghhh...isnt there
a show dedicated to disco on sundays???? and how many times can u
hear the Luther Vandross(back at one)remix or Whitney Houston remix.
My point is there are soooo many good songs out there and they seem
to be stuck in the same playlist over and over...I own a music store
in Perth Amboy, NJ (Downtown Music) and i have alot of freestyle
customers and i have no choice but to play cds or listen to Hot 97
or Z100 because they dont wanna hear disco...Very Frustrating......
KTU..The HIP-HOP/R&B/POP/DISCO..../dance BEAT OF NEW YORK......
