LOS ANGELES (Sept. 12) - John Ritter, whose portrayal of the bumbling but lovable Jack Tripper helped make the madcap comedy series ''Three's Company'' a smash hit in the 1970s, has died, his publicist and longtime assistant said Friday. He was 54.

Ritter fell ill Thursday on the set of his ABC sitcom ''8 Simple Rules ... For Dating My Teenage Daughter,'' said Susan Wilcox, his assistant of 22 years. The cause of death was a dissection of the aorta, the result of an unrecognized flaw in his heart, said his publicist, Lisa Kasteler.

Ritter died at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday,

I looked up to this man all my life!!!

I was shocked to hear that this morning. He was close to having a big hit with; 8 Simple Rules.

He will always be Jack Tripper.

RIP:(

I was soooo shocked when I heard this news this morning. I grew up watching "Three's Company". How sad! :(
Same here, I found out on another board when I checked New Posts... :(

I know I watched it way back when, but it was too long ago to still have any memories of the show...the role I remember most is a psycho robot in an early Buffy episode...

I felt horrible when I found out just a few minutes ago. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for John Ritter. I gew up watching Three's Company and I still enjoyed watching reruns of it on Nick at Nite. He was one of the funniest actors of our time and even though I didnt watch his new show 8 Simple Rules, he cracked me up everytime I'd see him on a talk show. He always seemed like such a gentle soul. 54 is so young and he leaves behind a wife, actress Amy Yasbeck, and a beautiful little girl, as well as older children. I cant imagine what 8 Simple Rules will do without him. As far as Im concerned, we have lost a legend today.
