If we are going to keep changing the name, than we should change it to this, because it is more descriptive of the music and it can also help bring in a cultures (fashion/style) which always helps bring music to the mainstream. It also does not let go of the past while still moving to the Future

BREAKBEAT (breaks)
HEARTBEAT (the beat)
HEARTHROB (the classics)
HEARTBREAK (in between - the new)
BREAKDANCE (electro)

BREAKDOWN (unecessary ad on)
HEARTBURST (unecessary ad on)

This will include both breaks, Freestyle, some trance (the ones with breakbeats), Classic Freestyle and electro Freestyle.

There are 2 main beats in dance music, the House beats, and the Break beats. feel free to do a servey and see which one is prefered. play the same song but change thew beat

PLUSES +:
New Name,
Officially merge breaks, freestyle and everything in between.
Madonna (the queen of pop's music will be part of this, giving it a huge boost)
More descriptive than freestyle
Renewal of style and culture B-boys, B-girls and Heartbreakers

MINUSES - :
New Name (changing the name is not always a good Hard to get some people to accept the change and ad ons.

feel free to discuss this, thats why I put this here

FIREBALL!!

WHATS UP??

I TRied to get a hold of you before going to orlando.

you still have the same e-mail adress right..if not e-mail me at

anyway, about your post............in a way i agree with you that maybe if we change the name it will do good for the genre, especially from those that stereotype this scene.

but at the same time i dontthink we should change it.
i mean, house music was always HOUSE music despite all the changes that it has had through out its history.
same thing with hiphop.

they both kept their names and they both sound nothing like they did in the early 80's.
freestyle is also along the same line and just as old. but the diference with freestyle, is that it kept changing its name everytime a diferent sound came along. it kept segregating itself.segregating its generations.segregating its regions.segregating its history and time periods and relations to all other forms of dance music and hiphop music.

so i understand looking for a name to unite all that and unite all that is hapening now, but if we change the name again..it will throw people off, confuse these people more than they are already.

although i came to hate the term freestyle.........i think its the longest name we had so far and the most popular and recognize. it took us a long time to get the industry to recognize that.
and freestyle goese back to the electro days as well, popularized by the way people danced, or freestyled songs over electro and hiphop beats or the way they experimented with musical elements in the production room. they called it latin hiphop and later latin freestyle, due to the large latin presence and musical influences, although everyone involved wasnt always latin. later the latin in latin freestyle was droped.
and freestyle was just freestyle.

its already the strongest name out there, despite what anyone calls it.
the name "freestyle' doese descibe all the freestyling and mixtures of music that we have had though out our history (hiphop,salsa,hi-nrg,house,trance etc).. as it also expresses the freestyling and experiminetations that are hapening now withing the undergound world of breaks, trance nad progressive house.

i think we should leave it.
and i think this community has enough issue to deal with, before going and changing the name again.

the name freestyle reflects our history, our glory days, our triumphs, our pride.it reflects our pain and humiliations. through the good and the bad times.
its the only thing many people still have to call their own and ties them to the past. also one of the last genres of music still seen as the only american dance form that Europe hasnt treid to pass as thiers like they did with house. (there is freestyle in europe, but they havent tried to claim it as thier inovation like some tried to do with house music. and they recognize the history as well.).

the name itself is like second generation. it was born american, and like many of us was an outcast and still is an outcast. a minority.in this country and in the music industry.it was diferent from what many people were used to.A mixture of many things. many didnt understand it or wanted to understand it. but its still here. still thriving.
It was born in the U.S. and reflected not only our musical elements, but our culture.
all our cultures. our street culture and our club culture, even our ethnic cultures. what it was like to grow up in the u.s. and be lil diferent than the mainstream. whether we are second generation cubans in miami, Puerto ricans in new york and chicago, mexicans on the west coast and other latins all over or italian american growing up in new york, jersey, phily and canada or second generation philipen's youth growing up in tha bay area.ETC.

the name freestyle has already become alot and a symbol to many.
Changing that again will be like a changing everything the name came to represent.

there is pride in that.

personaly, for these reasons..i say leave it as it is.
in time, like all genres of music, it will rise and bring back respect and recognition to its name.
