I was talking to my cousin in where freestyle is at today. He tells me that the reason for the fall of freestyle beside being corny, he also said that is all because of HOT 97 in NYC. Cause they had turn their back on us Freestyle Artists and Fans. All the other radio station followed what they did and Hip Hop grew stronger. So it left me wondering on what you peeps think. Is he right or wrong? So I will like to see your opinions from Artists, DJs, Radio Jocks, and of course you the fans.....let me know😕

I agree that HOT 97 turning their backs on freestyle was part of the problem but if I remember correctly HOT 97 started turning it's back on freestyle way before it switched to hip hop. In an effort to increase ratings, they changed from being a strictly dance music station to an everything/pop station and when that didn't help their ratings, they switched to Hip Hop. The other problem that I think contributed to the fall of freestyle was that freestyle was not being produced by any of the major record labels but a lot of the major record labels were goinlg crazy trying to sign hip hop artists. I know that some freestyle music was distributed by major record labels but in order for a type of music like freestyle to remain popular, the major labels must pick up on it, sign artists and producers, and then release quality material.

I agree ALEX, SAMk...and if I may add that record shops tend to sell close to nothing on Freestyle vinyl or nothing at all..and like Al's cousin said, and Sam..but, there's a itsy bit of hope! faith!

I dont't know if all the other stations followed HOT 97 but i know WBLS and KISS FM were the big rap stations. they always had rap and no one else dared touch it. HOT 97 seemed like it just wanted to take a fresh new start. FREESTYLE was repetitive after a few years. they might of just felt that "how long can we keep playing love songs on here?" so, they picked up rap as part of thier playlist. we soon heard "HIP-HOP HOORAY" along with "MARIA" on the same station. in my opinion, when TKA broke up, so did the future of freestyle.

I don't think that you can pinpoint the reason why Freestyle its no longer as popular as it was, or I should say why it's not being played on regular rotation anymore. I think it was a culmination of many things. The majority of people like to follow trends and that's what they did. HIp hop was new and different so they went there. I still have faith that one day it will turn around. How long did it take Mambo to come back around in the mainstream? It just takes patience and alot of hard work from Artist , fans, producers, labels, DJ's and Radio stations.

Well that's my opinion.

Naya
P.S. Hi Alex! 🙂

we need to keep making freestyle then. people will catch wind of it and begin to appreciate what happieness it has to offer. we need to teach the younger ones!! diane's son is always singing along to the freestyle songs in the car. lets teach our youth!!

Freestyle isnt big with the youth 🙁
I think there is only 2 people who listen to older freestyle at my high school.. me being one of them...
But the newer stuff is big.. but most people dont even know its freestyle.. up in canada it is "gino beats"
Some people just dont appriciate freestyle

Tone-e, it would surprise you if you came to CLUB DNA and watched all the young kids in there dancing and singing along to the freestyle songs. its amazing. you would never think these kids speak with the music they normally listen to. but as soo as the freestyle kicks in,well, they do know the music! its an 18 and over club, that impresses me very much!

Hey there

Thank you for replying, I agree with alot of you. Tone-e yes there's alot of youth involve in the music business regardless of the style. But is true alot of them know as much as we know when it comes to freestyle. I've proven that in an interview I did awhile back in W. Long Branch, NJ. I was doing an interview and I was giving away tickets of a show I was part of, I was giving guess who this artist is and win tickets game. What I was playing was New songs from old school artists and asking people who they were and what was there first hit. Like for example
Runaway Love artist Johnny O. first single "Fantasy Girl".
Well to get to the story this guy call up as I was playing "Infatuation" by Nice & Wild I figure no one is going to know this one, 2 callers didn't guess it, but guess what a 14 year old did, He didn't win the tickets because of his age but I got him to go out with us and eat along with a couple of other artists. So young people do listen is just like said on the 2k1 cd If you ain't down with HipHop your just not down. We have to be real and school these youngster on whats being real and whats not and that will help. And like Naya and I said a million times, Us the Artists, The producers, labels, promoters, and managers, have to stop being lazy and get to WORK! Stop trying to get easy access into the business and start putting out good music. I love freestyle to death, and I am a big huge fan of ROCK MUSIC not this alternative crap. We need to work on our vocals, work on our production, and work our promotions. is the only way we can survive whats been done to this beautiful business, and stop with the gossiping, and player hating cause is not going to get us any where but down. Let's unite and keep it real, keep it strong, but most of all Keep It Freestyle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS Hi NAYA **MUA** hugzzz and a especial shout out to Poze thanx for those kind words bro, keep creating great music.
Sincerely
😱

I know that back in '94 here in Chicago, B96 was trying to bring Freestyle back in a big way, with playing alot of old and new school at the time. I remember Collage (i'll be loving you), Denine (i remember you), Coro (stand by your lover), Johnny O (runaway love), and some more that I can't remember were in heavy rotation. I don't know what happened. I guess people either started complaining to the station because there was not enough hip/hop being played or who knows what.

I KNOW FREESTYLEKITTY - POINT #1 - SUP ALEX????

THE TRUE REASON WHY FREESTYLE MUSIC CAME TO A SUDDEN STOP WAS DUE TO THE FACT OF DECREASING RECORD SELLS.

AT ONE POINT EVERYTHING IN FREESTYLE MUSIC SOUNDED THE SAME AND DUE TO THAT MAIN FACTOR MANY OF US WEREN'T BUYING, LISTENING, SUPPPORTING, DANCING OR REQUESTING NEW FREESTYLE MUSIC.

WE STARTED TO BUY, LISTEN, SUPPORT, REQUEST AND DANCE TO OTHER TYPES OF MUSIC MAINLY HIGH ENERGY DANCE, UNDERGROUND HOUSE, OLD SCHOOL FREESTYLE, ALTERNATIVE, RAP, HIP-HIP, R&B, LATIN AND INDUSTRIAL MUSIC, ETC.

THAT'S WHY MANY OF THE MAJOR LABELS AND INDEPENDENT FREESTYLE RECORD LABELS ARE NO LONGER AROUND OR IF THEY ARE THEY ARE NOT RELEASING THAT MUCH NEW FREESTYLE MUSIC TO THE PUBLIC.

WHICH OF COURSE STOPPED MANY NEW AND OLD SCHOOL RECORDING ARTISTS, SONG WRITERS, RECORD PRODUCERS, REMIXERS, EDITORS, STREET, RADIO AND CLUB DJ'S AND PROMOTERS FROM DEPENDING ON FREESTYLE MUSIC AS A SOURCE OF INCOME.

SO WE ALL HAD TO PAY RENT, MORTGAGES, CAR PAYMENTS, BILLS AND PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE, ETC.

SO WE WERE ALL FORCED TO MOVE ON TO OTHER FORMS, TYPES OR STYLES OF MUSIC.

SO IF A CERTAIN STYLE OF MUSIC IS NOT SELLING, BEING SUPPORTED, REQUESTED DANCED OR LISTENED TO AND RECORDS LABELS ARE NOT RELEASING IT THEN RADIO STATIONS HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO PURSUE AND PLAY THE STYLE OF MUSIC THAT IS BEING BROUGHT, DANCED OR LISTENED TO, SUPPORTED OR REQUESTED BY AND OFFERED TO THE PUBLIC.

IT'S A SHAME BUT IN SO MANY WAYS WE ARE ALL (INCLUDING MYSELF) TO BLAME TO SOME DEGREE FOR THE DOWN FALL OF FREESTYLE MUSIC...

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU GIVE A FREESTYLE CD TO ANYONE AS A CHRISTMAS, VALENTINE'S DAY, ANNIVERSARY OR BIRTHDAY GIFT?

FREESTYLE MUSIC BUSTED OUT ON THE SCENE BECAUSE RADIO STATIONS AT ONE POINT JUST COULDN'T INGORE THE AMOUNT OF SUPPORT, RECORD SELLS AND REQUESTS IT WAS GENERATING PLUS THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THAT WERE LISTENING TO IT.

BUT SADLY ENOUGH AT A CERTAIN POINT IN TIME THE RADIO STATIONS JUST COULDN'T IGNORE THE DECREASING NUMBER OF SELLS, SUPPORTERS, REQUESTS AND PEOPLE LISTENING TO IT EITHER.

AND THEN CAME THE COMMERCIAL DEATH OF FREESTYLE MUSIC.

I KNOW BECAUSE I WAS LEFT STANDING THERE WITH MY OWN FREESTYLE RECORD LABEL...

MUCH RESPECT AND LOVE TO ALL THAT HAVE ALWAYS CREATED, SUPPORTED, BELIEVED IN, BROUGHT, DANCED TO, LISTENED, REQUESTED AND TREASURED FREESTYLE MUSIC!!!

AND LIKE MY GOOD FRIEND SAM K, THE ARABIAN KNIGHT ALWAYS SAYS:

"MANNERS OPEN DOORS THAT POSITION, MONEY AND FAME CANNOT"

PEACE!!!

I KNOW FREESTYLKITTY - POINT #2

GEORGE LAMOND WAS CONSIDERED THE LAST PIONEER FREESTYLE RECORDING ARTIST OF THE FREESTYLE MUSIC FRONTIER TO MANY RADIO STATIONS, STREET, RADIO , CLUBS DJ'S AND PROMOTERS, AS WELL AS TO MAJOR AND INDEPENDENT RECORD LABELS.

THE SURVIVAL OF FREESTYLE MUSIC WAS SOLELY GOING TO COME DOWN TO THE SURVIVAL OF GEORGE LAMOND AS A MAJOR LABEL FREESTYLE RECORDING ARTIST.

I HAD MANY RECORD LABELS TELL ME THAT THEY WANTED ME TO WRITE, PRODUCE, MIX OR EDIT SOME FREESTYLE SONGS FOR THEM.

BUT THAT THEY FIRST WANTED TO SEE THE OUTCOME OF GEORGE LAMOND'S CAREER AS A MAJOR LABEL FREESTYLE RECORDING ARTIST BEFORE THEY TOTALLY COMMITTED THEMSELVES AS A RECORD LABEL TO THE FREESTYLE PROJECTS THEY WANTED ME TO WORK ON.

SO IMAGINE WHAT KIND OF IMPACT IT HAD ON THOSE PROJECTS AND THE FUTURE OF FREESTYLE MUSIC WHEN HE DIDN'T SELL THAT MANY VINYL RECORDS, CDS OR CASSETTES.

AND WHEN HE WAS RELEASED FROM HIS COLUMBIA/SONY RECORDING ARTIST CONTRACT.

THAT TRULY MARKED THE END OF FREESTYLE MUSIC TO EVERYONE BEHIND THE FREESTYLE MUSICAL SCENE AND MOVEMENT.

FROM THE MUSICAL EXECUTIVES TO ALL OTHER FREESTYLE RECORDING ARTISTS - IT WAS OVER!!!

COLUMBIA/SONY DIDN'T WANT TO LET GEORGE LAMOND GO BUT ONCE AGAIN DUE TO POOR RECORD SELLS THEY HAD NO CHOICE.

BUT GEORGE LAMOND HAS BEEN MUSICALLY BLESSED SO HE'LL ALWAYS HAVE ANOTHER RECORDING DEAL OR MUSICAL PROJECT WAITING FOR HIM AROUND THE CORNER...

NELSON, WHATS UP KID. ITS BEEN AWHILE. A LONG WHILE.

YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT GEORGE, AND FOR THAT REASON IS WHY HIS BILLS ARE STILL BEING PAID FROM HIS MUSIC & "VOICE."
EVENTHOUGH, I FEEL HE HAS NOT REACHED THE POINT THAT HE SHOULD HAVE, BUT ITS ALL GOOD CUZ HIS TIME WILL COME.

I THINK NELSON & SAM K. SAID IT BEST ABOUT THE LABELS & RADIO STATIONS GOING WITH THE $FLOW$. THE LABELS WEREN'T SUPPORTING FS, SO HOW CAN YOU EXPECT THE RADIO STATION TO GROW PLAYING OLD STUFF. I THINK IT IS WRONG THAT YOU HAVE RADIO STATIONS TODAY THAT DONT SUPPORT ANY FS, WHEN IN THE PAST, FS WAS THE MUSIC THAT MADE THE STATION. EXAMPLE: POWER 96(MIA).

I FEEL THAT IF YOU HAVE THE CONNECTIONS, SO WHAT IS THE WAIT FOR?

ALEX WAS RIGHT, WE NEED TO KEEP SCHOOLING THE YOUNGSTERS AND MOVE UP FROM THERE.

Thanks for the info...

You know I had a lot of DJ's and all other types of people come up to me & say "Hey why are you playing that type of music?" while I was home, practicing on my keyboards...

I always tell them "If you've lived the times when this type of music could be called such then you wouldn't be playing what you play at clubs today!"

And then there is the younger crowd (7yrs to 15yrs old). Come to me and say "Wow! What kind of music is that? It's unique & beautiful!"

That little comment gives me the inspiration & hope that Freestyle will live again...
