I have something very interesting I want to share. And it was something I was thinking about.

I am of Puerto Rican decent and when I was young, I only spoke fluent spanish. When I started Kindergarten, I cried because when the teacher spoke to me I didn't understand English. They had to get a teachers assistant that can communicate with me in spanish in order to keep me feeling comfortable and stop crying. As time went on, I picked up English and stopped speaking spanish as much as I used to.

Now my kids, I started speaking to them in Spanish but spoke mostly English to them because of school and modeling. (My kids used to model when they were like 1 yrs old to 5 yrs.) So my kids today don't speak spanish at all.

I've come to realize that a lot of kids are like mine. They are of Latin decent and don't speak spanish. Nor understand it. Yet, in the professional world, such as doctors, it is now mandatory to learn spanish as a second language. So we have all other races that can speak the Spanish language and yet those that are hispanics don't know it. It's ashame. And it makes me wonder how the future will be with the hispanic race raising their children without teaching them their own language?

That's a sad reality. That's the deal in the black community where many kids in inner city schools don't teach as much black history as 10 years ago. I think all kids need to learn history, even black, native american history.

i must thank my mom for always speaking to us in spanish, i am fluent in spanish,, and my older brother even got his masters in spanish, and now with my lil brothers and sister my mom is doing the same she speaks to them only in spanish and the older one who is now 12 reads writes and speaks perfect spanish,
on the other hand my cousins don't speak spanish that well b-cuz my aunt wanted 2 try to learn english and never spoke in spanish, now they r adults and don't speak good spanish , and my aunt still speaks messed up english
but it is sad when i see latinos who can't speak spanish, when spanish is such a beautiful language

That is so true LaBetty, many of us born & raised out here lack (lacked) interest in our history, cultures, etc.
I personally did'nt care for spanish till I was a young adult, and when I went to P.R. people laughed cuz my spanish was (VERY) busted.
With time I became interested in our language and now I'm proud to be able to speak it & write it.....
pa que lo sepas ....lol

i have to agree, i am puerto rican myself and when my mother was around she spoke very bad eng and fliuent spanish, so when she spoke to me and my brothers and sister she spoke spanish but as i got older i DONT know how to speak it(except the bad words,i know them real well) but i understand it if you talk to me in spanish, and know after all these years i wish i knew how to speak it.

yeah you see? This is what I mean. And it's really ashame.

Interesting Betty.....I fall into that catergory....as well as my sisters. I took Spanish classes from 6th grade all the way through college. I know enuff to get by, but I get very intimidated when I use it cus it sounds like shit, very choppy....HOWEVER, I still use it....when I wanna show off to my friends or gossip about someone at work or esp. when I'm in a dominantly Latin enviornment (and with my family).

Well, different language for me, but I can understand.

My great grandparents spoke fluent Italian. I can remember being younger, and when a kid walked into a room, and something was being said that the kid shouldn't hear, conversation switched into Italian.

I studied Italian for two years in highschool, and two in college. Was able to read it and speak it enough to make myself understood. But when my grandparents died, I had no one to speak Italian to, and I lost everything. It's gone. I can remember three phrases.

Io mi chiamo Carlo......I am called Chuck
Apirie la porta, per favore.......open the door please.
mi non piace cafe`........I don't like coffee.

So basically, if I go to Italy, I can introduce myself, ask to be let into somewhere, and refuse a cup of coffee.....:lol

I also thank my mom for teaching my sister, brother, and I Spanish. It was mandatory in our house to speak spanish (she swore we spoke about her in english) so that is what we did and I am grateful to her for it. Not only do I speak it but can write it pretty well. I also teach my son Spanish and he talks it well but with an accent so that when he gets older he can use it to his advantage.

I want my daughter to learn spanish and speak it fluently also because I find it so hot ( meaning the best thing) When younger people such as 10, 13 yrs old and younger know how to speak that its makes me feel good about where I come from. I myself speak spanish and english but dont really know that much spanish and thats a shame. I know I speak better spanish than my mother it was told to me plenty of times :yeey

I agree with you mama. My kids are the same don't know jack doo doo of spanish and it's my fault. I feel that if I had someone who talked spanish in my home to me all the time I would talk it all the time but both me and my husband both talk mostly english. and it's really sad. I vowed that this year I would get on the ball and teach my kids spanish.

My little sister knows more spanish than I do because one she always goes to PR like 2 times a yr and her father and fathers family mainly speak spanish

Sorry but that was me I was suppose to post that but what happened was I forgot I was on Yvettes name :face

Thankfully i'm able to speak, read and write in spanish because my mom wouldn't aloud me to speak english in the house so i wouldn't forget it. She used to say that in school and when i was playing all i spoke was english so it was only fare that i spoke to her in spanish.

Well as for my kids, they seem to do what i did when i was growing up. They understand it but wont speak it. My mother speaks to my kids in spanish and they understand every word but i have yet hear them speak it. Its a shame but lately I have been speaking more spanish at home and hopefully they will pick it up.

I feel that learning your history is good. But, forcing an American born latino to learn spanish,or feel that it is sad or a shame is wrong.People dont ask BLACKS why dont you speak AFRICAN??The same goes for WHITES, People dont ask them why dont they speak, their EUROPEAN language??I find that Latinos are Prejudice against their own community, when they should be helping.I dont speak spanish, because I am born american to a father of mexican descent from CORPUS CHRISTIE, TEXAS and a mother of PUERTO RICAN descent born in CALIFORNIA (BAY AREA), Her parents are from PUERTO RICO.We never spoke spanish ,but when went to my fathers side we listen to TEJANO music and when we go to my moms side we listen to SALSA and eat arroz con gondules, pasteles,etc...The culture was always there and still is, I buy lots of SALSA, BACHATA, MERENGUE,and BOMBA Cd's.When I decide to learn SPANISH is because I want to, not because of what people think a latino should be.I am BORICUA, TEJANO, and AMERICAN!!!!! 😀

betty the exact same problem lies with my family, my parents just spoke vietnamese with me & my sisters to begin with but by now we've forgotten half of it.. it'll be even worse once i have my kids, this language & spanish & so many others will suffer in the future, for this reason
