Hi.

I am curious to know just how hard-core some of you FreeStyle fans truly are. Although I do not claim to have the biggest or most extensive FreeStyle collection, I do consider it to be more than satisfactory.

Here is what I have:
CD's (singles, albums, & compilations) = 300
vinyl (singles, albums, & compilations) = 550

I do not collect FreeStyle audio tapes because their fidelity is not as good as that of CD and vinyl.

I also have other (non-FreeStyle) music, but FreeStyle is what I mostly collect and buy.

P.S. Post your numbers and impress me.

Fernando,

I would say that roughly, I have about the same, except that the total number of records in my crates is approximately 650 and CDs is at least 200 (probably more)...

Unfortunately, I own a once extensive cassette collection (I gave some away as they were replaced with CDs)...There was a time when I held a personal boycott against CDs (remember when the industry claimed that CDs would eliminate vinyl completely by 1995?) until labels began making CD-only releases and I gave in at the end of 1996!!!

Now I regret every minute of it!!! Half of the shit I have on tape you can't even find any more, let alone on CD...

I know what you mean.

Rhoq,

I know what you mean about some of the stuff released on audio tape not being available on any other format. However, as you said, there was no choice for us, the FreeStyle fans, when releases became CD-only types of deals. Although I do not collect music on tape, there was a time, about 15 years ago, when tapes were the only way for consumers to record their music, so as to make mixes/medleys of their collections.

You know, there is a possibility that you might be able to transfer some of what you have on tape over to CD, while at the same time eliminating some of the hiss and keeping much of the fidelity in the recording. Try playing your tapes on a deck that has Dolby Noise Reduction (DNR), and turn that feature on, even if the tapes were not originally recorded with it: "Dolby C" would probably be best. Run the audio out from the tape deck into a good mixer. Use the mixer to pump up the highs and mids just enough to compensate for the loss in fidelity due to the Dolby Noise Reduction (which elimintaes hiss but also some of the highs and mids). Feed the audio from your mixer into your computer. Create WAV files. Edit those files however you want. Then, "burn" them onto CD's.

Hi Fernando,

Thanks for the advice, actually that is what I have been doing (except instead of .wav files, I record them as .aif files)...I only use a tape source if I have no other choice.

WOW!! I'm impressed guys!!

Well, I've got ALOT of cassettes, especially maxi-singles, still adding to my vinyl collection which now seems much harder to find, and my CD collection is growing strong! I try to get mixed compilations, maxi-singles, and then straight cd's (is that what you call them?). I feel so bad that I didn't collect more, especially vinyl, cuz I started collecting in the mid-late 80's.

Well I was one that didnt buy vinyl so I have like 3 tracks on vinyl. And my cds I have over approx 250 in which alot of these are custom cds from vinyl and I havent counted the how many actual different songs I have!!

Prepare to be amazed!!!

Yo Freak -

I have a friend who only owns 1 Freestyle CD as well - THE BEST OF STEVIE B...At least your friend owns a CD by an artist not too many people are familiar with, lol...

I never thought to count. I have an extensive collection as well since I have been collecting Freestyle since '86 my whole attic is nothing but DJ equipment, CDs, full-length albums, 12 "s and some cassettes. I always hated cassettes. I started a list two years ago and never finished it. All I can say is I have alot and am proud of my collection. Of course there are records out there that I am looking for and hopefully will find.

I have over 3000 12" singles. I've been deejaying since 1990. I started buying 12" since 1986. Out of those 3000+, 800 are Freestyle. Yes I had more than 5000 records at once, but over these last 3 years I've sold alot of played out music. I only keep anthems, Techno & Freestyle. I've sold all of my over 200 Ghetto House records. As far as Cd's goe, I have about 30 Freestyle Cd's. I don't collect them much. They were all given to me as promo.

Oops almost forgot. I have only had one Freestyle tape my whole life & that was Judy Torres-Love Story back in '88 or '89. My sister ganked it from me back in the day & I have never seen it since. I never liked tapes, I just liked records. I feel if it ain't on record it ain't real. That is why I do not own Freestyle cd's as well.

Nice.

MakeYaDance,

You have a nice collection of FreeStyle. I agree with you: I prefer vinyl to all other formats. However, I feel the audio quality of a CD, assuming it was mastered & recorded well, is superior.

P.S. I sent you the package on Monday.

Yo Fernando, I got the CD , I am not sure if I got it yesterday or today cos I just checked my mail today. I am going to put it on i a little while. I will email you tomorrow. As far as records go, I know that the quality isn't as crisp, but I have always felt that that is as original as you can get. I have never had somebody pay me $200 for a cd. I have sold a few records at $200. Many between $75-$150. Some people offer me $60, I tell them to step off. Right now I am selling my Poetry record. I don't know how much I will take, but I have had a couple of people from this sight interested in buying it. All I have to say is that I will not take less than $100 for it. So I am still holding on to it. I know it ain't a record to kill for, but hey where else are you going to find it.

I know what you mean.

MakeYaDance,

It is, indeed, the vinyl which draws the highest prices, especially among the serious FreeStyle collectors.
