The Republican-led House voted Thursday to prevent federal courts from ordering states to recognize gay marriages sanctioned by other states.

The Marriage Protection Act was adopted by a 233-194 vote, buoyed by backing from the Bush administration.

It would strip the Supreme Court and other federal courts of their jurisdiction to rule on challenges to state bans on gay marriages under a provision of the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act.

The effect of the bill would be to single out gays and lesbians, barring them from going into federal court to seek to have their marriages recognized, several Democrats said.

While Republicans defended states' rights, Democrats said the phrase recalled Southern opposition to desegregation, which was propelled by a series of federal court rulings.

Look on the bright side Chuck, we gays tend to be vindictive when we don't get our way, so to spite Bush, we'll just all vote for John Kerry :barf

Right on, girl! Fuk 'em.

They can ban marriage, but they def. can't ban the love I feel for my bf of 7 years.

And I love what Bush is doing to himself. He's totally walking himself out of the White House.

I hate to say this but BUSH will win and continue to be our president. There's alot more imporant issues like WAR, which should be our number one priority.Although I feel GAYs shoud marry, everyone should be treated all equally. What there doing now to the GAY community is full of hate, prejudices & disrimination.Like what they did to the black people, Jewish,etc...

I hate to break it to you, Frankie, but this "War", if you will, isn't really an important issue. The money being spent is. And a lot of people are just simply tired of it. Tired of Bush. And tired of this presidency. This war, is his war. He's just continuing where is father left off.

I'm just doing my part in spreading the word. Vote.

Harry's got the right to his opinion, that's what being an American is about.

Harry, the House didn't approve the amendment. What the House did was block federal courts from changing state rulings.

Ex. TankTruck and I 🙂lol go ahead, laugh) decide to get married. We go to Mass. and get a marriage license. We go back no NJ, and sue the state of NJ to recognize our marriage, because we have a legal marriage license. The state court gives a decision to the state of NJ. For anyone else, the next step would be to go to a federal court/supreme court. The House voted to take away the power of the Supreme court, so they cannot rule on these decisions, leaving gay couples with no other option to accept defeat.

The people who passed this measure are trying to have their cake and eat it too. They want a Federal Law passed to prevent gay marriage, but then say that Federal Courts can't be involved in the decisions that the state are making on the state level.

of course everyone has a right to their opinion, but in his case it's causing him to vote in a direction which ultimately leads to less rights for other americans. The amendment has zero affect for him (I'm assuming he's not gay) so why would he be for something that hurts others??? I just don't see the reason for the close-mindedness, sorry :bangbang
