I'm surprised no one else realized this but when i turned on WNEW 102.7 this morning to listen to RON & FEZ (they bascially tried to continue the infamous talk format since their buddies OPIE & ANTHONY got fired) and to my surprise, they were playing TOP 40!!!! Now, many of you know that before WNEW turned talk, they were a rock station but there were too many of those and thier rating took off when they did talk shows. Now, its bascially KTU without the FREESTYLE!

I dunno.....I dont think we need another station like KTU, especially if it DOES NOT PLAY FREESTYLE!

WNEW/102.7 FM, which has been on life support since mainstays Opie and Anthony were fired last summer, is again the subject of a format-flip rumor - but this time it seems pretty strong and specific.

Late Wednesday night, Allan M. Sniffen, founder of the respected New York Radio Message Board Web site, wrote that WNEW was going to change to a AAA (Adult Album Alternative) format, aimed mostly at women ages 18 to 34.

In the message, Sniffen, whose sources are very good, said, "I won't 'guarantee' it but, if I were a betting man, I'd put money on it."

In response, Dana McClintock, spokesman for WNEW owner Infinity Broadcasting, said, "I decline to comment other than to say we are always looking for ways to improve the station." On the other hand, a source within the company said, "Something probably will happen, but they haven't decided what or when yet."

The commercial AAA format is "an updated AOR, modern rock format," according to Chuck Singleton, program director of public WFUV/90.7 FM, which uses a non-commercial AAA format that is considerably wider and deeper. Artists who fit the format might include the Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, Tracy Chapman, Susan Tedeschi and Norah Jones.

Based on the recent ratings, Infinity has to do something. Among the important listeners ages 25-54, in winter 2002, WNEW had a 0.9 share, earning it a tie at No. 25 in the New York area, down from the 2001 rating of 1.7 and No. 24. More to the point, in fall 2001, Long Island natives Opie and Anthony were No. 1 in their 3-7 p.m. time slot, with a 7.6. Without them, last fall the station, with a 1.2, was tied at No. 21 with Caribbean WLIB/1190 AM and classical WQXR/96.3 FM.

Today Don and Mike(who airs from here in DC on NEW's sister station: WJFK) was playing bites of WNEW new format, they was playing mostly hip hop. But we still got Ron and Fez, they will start broadcasting from the Fairfax, Va studios of WJFK next week.

They used to broadcast from WNEW studios, but now for the rest of the week they have to broadcast from Westwood One studios in NYC and sometimes WFAN studios until they come to DC.
