Okay I've been sitting around MAXFREESTYLE.COM central wondering what the fans of the world want in a Freestyle song. I've read ALOT of post on this message board (too bad I can't paid doing that! lol) and there is a ton of info here. I want to hear from ALL of you, what in your mind makes a great Freestyle record (beats, keyboards, singing, etc...)

I can't wait to see what you guys and gals respond with!

a new sound for keyboards ( synth ) stay away from planet rock beat.
stay away from words that are in most freestyle songs like - remember , why did you, pain in my heart ect. the tempo should be around 120 bpm give or take.
it should have some cool edits. and stay away from thoses strikes I had enough of those.

Ok, Beats. You need some bad assed beats. The Latin based drums is what gives it a distinct sound...those Latin based drums im talking about you can hear them in any C-bank song. You could go a diffrent way however and go crazy with the record scratches and edits. You need edits. Every song needs edits. Thats another important element......"On the Loose" had some Crazy insane edits by Berrios. The synth-voice-break is also really good....Thats something i havent seen in new school freestyle. My favorite one was in Soave crying over you, and also the synth voice in the Charlie Dee Never Say Never Mix of "Never Let You go" by Sweet Sensation. Almost every song had that synth voice (i dont know if its really called that though), even the rare underground ones like Isis "Let Me Hold you" and Passion Play "Baby Cant You See" had the synth-voice. TKA "Scars of love had the most memorable. La-Luv-La-Luv -La-La-Luv-----Ahhhhhhhhhh

More on Beats....I also like when some songs go the Real Latin way, with Salsa flavor....thats when it gets out of hand!!

The Songs should be fast and sped up, but not too fast, just a little higher speed pitch. Some songs neeeeeeded this badly.

The Keyboards? Get out all those keyboards from the 80s cause they were fly as hell......

The Singing? In Spanglish, or do a Spanish Version also as well as the English.

The Legnth of the song, if its a single, should be about 8 or 7 minutes as a club mix. Why that long? Well Damn, the songs from back in the day had that legnth. Who can forget that memorable almost 12 minute Club Mix of C-Bank "Perfect". Specially the beginning....I dunno, i always prefered the long version of the song cause if its a good song i hate to see it end....plus its more authentic.

Theres way more i havent even covered in this reply, but thats just a general idea......just some thoughts ... lol

input in making a freestyle song

I would say, listen to what hip hop is doing with the drum beats, then add emotion with keyboard pads(emotion is what has driven freestyle),make the music funky and make sure the words enable someone to sing the lyrics not just run down the melody reciting too many words, also if they sing it would really help and sing on key. Make sure nothing about the song is Hackneyed!! If you don't know what that means look up the word and apply it to freestyle!!! Intially at the start of freestyle the sound took from all other forms of dance music at the time, that would help now. Make it sound like it was done in 2005 not 95 or 85 :) imagine if Lil Jon did a record with Lydia Lee Love or George Lamond!!

I suggest things that realate to people's lives, to people's memories, tho their past and present. Just in different words.... used in the old heart throb songs... freestyle can't change much that's what has made freestyle... Freestyle has always had something to do with people's past and people's feelings...
ya know. Just make it a little more interesting... but don't change the beets really too much... cuz then it ain't freestyle no more....
keep it alive the right way....

You should go back to the basics, listen to the OLD STUFF . I mean Starting with "Let the music play" up till early 1990. Forget the Planet Rock Beat, it's played out, forget the whole "Together Forever"/"Temptation" thing, too many people overdid that. Stay away from most of the Viper records sound. Just go back to where it all started, before people really cared if it would cross over, if everyone would like it, if it would be picked up by a major label. Just do it to do it, write about the raw emotions of life, whether it be heartbreak, family trauma, falling in love, whatever moves your soul. When you do the music, go back to when it was raw; thats what made the old stuff so cool.
I was a singer and I can tell you when I sang it from my soul and the writer would tear up, I knew it was on. It comes from your life, not from a focus group. When I sing about pain, I feel the pain and sometimes I would almost choke up. When I sing about love, I could feel the same feeling as if I just fell in love.
Two of the best memories I have when it comes to interpeting a song are...
1) Sandee' singing "Notice Me" after telling my fiend and myself her label just dropped her. It was so raw and on the surface, you could feel it.
2) Jasmin singing "Once is enough" after telling us she never recieved a cent for recording her other tune "On the loose".
With both of the songs the info they told wasn't the same as the messege of the song but, the emotion was coming through nonetheless.
Just like everything in life, if it's not from the heart why bother. :bunny
