I guess Sheryl Swoops has come out. She announced that she is gay and she's tired of having to hide it.

She also stated that she was worried about people and kids not looking up to her anymore and not seeing her as a positive role model...???

Now, she is the best player in the WNBA (3 or 4 time MVP, Multi-time Allstar, scoring champ, etc..)

Now she did mention she was not allways gay and that some people might not look to kindly on that or not really believe she is gay since she was married once and has a 8 year old child.

So the question came up about gay athletes and is sports and America ready for gay athletes?

Now it's been my impression that most of the WNBA players are gay to begin with so what's the big deal.

???????????

Sad to say, but as enlightened as the U.S.A. thinks it is, the gender issue always puts this country right back in the witch burning days. Gender roles are a big thing here, whether or not a human being is a good person or not. It is kind of sad, that by this woman coming out, it may affect her career and the way people percieve her. She should still be viewed as a positive role model no matter what her private life is about. Many 'straight people', have much more deviant sexual thoughts and desires than most 'same gendered' couples.

It took courage for her to come out the closet. In a sport where it is thought that all female athletes are lesbians. I hope it can encourage more acceptance, but it will still be hard in male pro sports for open gay athletes to succed. I hope it will be accepted. Who these people sleep with should not be our concern!!

There are not a lot of "out" active atheletes.

Martina Navratolova (however that's spelled) and Rudy Galindo were both out when they competed.
