I was in a deep discussion the other night, then ones you have after a couple.... About what each of us dj's do as sort of a ritual before we make a tape. Like I have got to plan mine out. I like programming. If feel even you F up in a mix (not that I do of course) but if your selection is right and the entry is right but you suffer a little railroad mix, you'll still come off. Because you song selection was hot. (Of course that will become your practice tape you know the one that you say you'll do over but keep listening to it like that because you never do it again the same way twice) Oh and of couse you have to take your MD/Tape into somebody's car immediately to be loud & proud and see how it sounds. (Then talk as loud as you can over the music 'cause you won't put the volume down and say "yo check it out it's coming in right wait.....ok Now! Yo did you hear that!?! Yo You miss it!?! REWIND that! What do you do before, during, or after a session?😉
 
Sometimes.....I wait till about 20 seconds before the break or the end of the song, begin the frantic search for what song I want next.....and BAM!!! I slam it in!!! Then say to myself...'that sucked!!' That usually happens when I'm distracted (like by a cutie, or to get my drink on!!)😀

Ohhh do I know that one... What also sucks is when you've had your part cued since the first verse and you finally get the intro to the break, You've been ready for it a pratically telgraphed mix... cross the fader .. live line.. OOpps you made the needle jump back and missed your shot on the one.😡

Last nite I made a specialty of mine It's an Orange Julius with Vodka I call it the Ice cap, well I felt nice and creative. It sounded great while I was nice and Bold but when I just finished playing the MD, boy I'm never drinking and getting behind the wheels again!

Umm. lets see today I'm going to the hospital to visit my Hubby (works there not a patient) and ask him to "borrow" for me them rubber straps they wrap around your arm before they take your blood. I heard they are the best for "floating" your turntables.
 
i do that too as soon as i finish a tape i play it in someone's ride.. i also mix with 2 pics next to my turns, on of my sister (rip) and one of my ex girlfriend, you know for the extra boost, like a crowd watchin you.... also, i too plan out my mixes, if it turns out to be too short, i just grab records to fill it in, or do some turntablist trick to fill in the time slot. my mixes have to be on point so if i messup even one, even if its the last song, i start all over, i find that i'll find better places to drop my beats or acapellas.
 
Even if its the last song....Uggh I hate that True Djs just cant leave well enough alone. My Man is always " YO why you stop that for that was hot" I came in a little late and I was fighting the pitch "Oh come on no one can tell" Well, I could!

I just bought neew slip covers just to put on top of the old ones I have had for 20 yrs that are now practically transparent that they are so thin... But I refuse to get rid of them..

How do you personalize your stuff? I just got this itty bitty I mean tiny little chrome flight case for my needles and matching chrome turntable plates!

I have the same slipmats as well....I just keep puttin' new 'plastics' on the platter..(you know, instead of the paper sleeves that come wit vinyl..those plastic/cellophane ones, I cut 'em round and use them as a buffer in between the slipmat and the platter) I got new ones @ the DJ convention in AC, but they are too stiff and thick.....sux

I had some personalized slip mats when I DJ'd (past tense 🙁 ). When I used to make a tape, I'd let the people living with me know B4 I started, "NO INTERRUPTIONS PLEASE" & I would pick out the records before starting the mix. Only problem with that wuz I'd underestimate the amount of songs I could fit on the tape & still have a good 10 minutes or so left on the tape after the last record I picked out! 😱 So I'd miprovise...though for some reason the last song on the tape always mixed in BADLY for me!
 
Just noticed a pastey habit .... I've been doing alot of disc mixing. And I just got alot of hip hop on vinyl. First thing I did was swipe the twelve across my leg to open the record. Thats one I Forgot I did. And then I pulled out My little cirlcle stickers Yellow for a vocal drop, red for a scratch beat. And I began to color coordinate My Mix!😎
 
Did a Mobile gig last Sat. Now I remember why I hate mobile gigs...... Requests. Requests REQUESTS FOR THE STUPIDEST SONGS ON EARTH!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know you have to play requests for the corny music but usually at a PR party its for some salsa, merengue, FReestyle, raggae or club even old school but Country Music? One of the guests who was co-worker of the host kept asking for Garth Brooks. I kept tellig him I didn't have it because when I was hired (BS) The playlist choices were made by the host and country wasnt chosen. Well of course he went out to his car a brought me the CD. The guy was drunk at this point as well and started getting in my way. I always show up at my gigs with my husband or another big guy. Immediately he played g-man with the suit and sunglasses "excuse me sir you'll have to stand back" The guy replied how far? My Husband sees this guy is wasted and said take a few steps back.... little more ..a couple of steps more sir..... please step back.... that will be fine and then he walked over to the fire exit door and shut it and locked him outside LOL I said not bad (I always say my husband escalates to quickly but no screaming or fighting this time. We called over the host and let him know the guy was drunk and getting in our face because of a request. The host asked what was it that we wouldn't play we explained and gave him the CD and he said BOTA ESO play some Freestyle and F that Mother f'er leave him out there and if he comes back and beefs let me know I'll talk to him. It worked out but I still hate corny requests!
 
Try inviting some of your DJ friends down. Set your music, get plent o booze, or vice of choice, then take turns mixing. Turns out hot!!!! Competition is high, pressures on, you get very creative when spinnin for your peers. Be sure to record it too (after a few drinks we often neglect that part)LOL.

I did that for 10 yrs then I got married. Now I sneak a night or two like that in! But do I have some sick old tapes LOL The creativity gets turned oup to SIlly!

What i do usually after the session is listen to the recordng again to see how it came out. if i like it i take it to my bluebear cruiser and blast it. if i dont like it, i retry again noticng the mistake i made that it sucked.
A few weeks ago i was practicng mixng old club house with new ones and i was jamming until i received a call from a female friend and forgot all about the record spinng and it went all the way to the end.
I guess theres something wrong with the arm, that once it goes to the end i cant play the record again until i fix the arm up again. I couldnt play anything after four days later...which it really sucked.
bummer, darn!!! I NEED NEW TABLES! the latest version of Technics are waitng for me...he he

I almost forgot, if i messed up during the recordng...i start all over which i hate the most.

you know what...the only ritual i have is when im about to go play at a party..no matter what size the party is, or where it's at..NO MATTER WHAT..it seems i ALWAYS have to take a dump before i spin...and im being completely honest..ive been dj'ing 16 years..every time...lol
