I have selected this problem as my Science Fair project because I felt that Science was more than just plants and animals. I also felt that Freestyle was more than just music. So I turned Freestyle into a question, a question that I have been asking myself lately. Has Freestyle changed? And if it did, has it changed for the better or for the worse? In order to answer these questions, I must use my Science skills to find the answers. I can state a Hypothesis, test my Hypothesis as well, and also record my data and make graphs to show all the work I have done. I can’t just go to the library and find a book on Freestyle music. What I can do is ask many Freestyle fans the same question, and interview Producers and Artists who will know the answers I am looking for.

This is what my project is based on, it is based on the fans and the artists opinions. Where do I find the Freestyle fans? That is easy, because I go to a web-site called Club Freestyle that is created by a man named Jack G. This site contains over 3,000 members who are all Freestyle fans. One member named Antonio Martinez, has helped me with the history of Freestyle itself, which is my background information.

Freestyle first started in the clubs in the late 1980’s, not being played on the radio as much as today. When Freestyle started getting air play, it was Hot 105 in Miami, and Power 106 in Los Angeles that promoted the hits by TKA, Nayobe, and Expose. Later on, more stations began to recognize Freestyle, and more hits were being made. Despite the great number of hits being made, Freestyle has taken a downfall. When it did, it was called the “Freestyle Backlash.” This downfall was made because House music, Rap, Pop, and R&B had taken over the stations, leaving Freestyle being played as Classics. Although they are Classics, they are Classics that will always be remembered, and Classics that will never die. Today, there are new Freestyle music being made. The question is, has it all changed?

My hypothesis for this project, is that Freestyle has changed in many different ways. I would have said that it hadn’t changed, but I feel that my opinion is not enough for this project. For the fact that there are many other people out there, that may say it has changed for whatever the reason may be. So I say that the answer may vary, depending on the out come of the answer.

The procedures I have taken, was to first go to Club Freestyle, and post a thread. A thread is a post made by a member asking questions about Freestyle so that other members can answer to it giving their opinions. The first thread that I made was about “Young Teens.” It asked the members what they thought about young teens being into Freestyle. I asked this because Freestyle could have changed because of the new audience that they made. Next, I made another thread called “Freestyle Then/Freestyle Now, What has changed OR Has it changed?” and in this thread they can vote on either “Yes” or “No.” Whatever their vote may have been, they had a chance to say why exactly they thought that. Next, I did an interview with a Producer named Nelson”FFWD”Cruz, asking the same questions I have and even more. Whatever the out come to my question may be, it would be stated in my results and conclusion.

The results and conclusions to “Freestyle Then/Freestyle Now, What has changed OR Has it changed?” is that it has changed. Twenty one people had chosen “Yes”, giving it 84%, and the ones that chose “No” had only equaled to 16%. So my hypothesis had been correct. Now the reasons for people saying it has changed, was that Freestyle back
then lasted longer and had a softer beat to it. Today, the songs are cut down 2-3 minutes, and the beats sound more like Techno. Now, Freestyle has also changed, because the Artists them selves have changed. I had asked some people why they thought Artists may have changed their genre of music, and some said it was because of the money, or they just felt like doing something diffrent. The interview I did with Nelson”FFWD”Cruz will be on my display board, and all the responses to my project from the members of Club Freestyle, will also be shown on my display board as all my data. This will be giving the credit they deserve, because with out them, my project could not have been completed.

I am glad I had chosen this topic, because I have learned something more about the music I love so much. You must know that Freestyle is not just music, it is a part of our history, and contains so much Chemistry. For me to have done all this with the interview and everything, made me look at this genre of music differently. To find out that freestyle has changed, and realized that it hasn’t changed for the better to most people, maybe the Artists would do something about it, and make Freestyle what it used to be....

LMFAO..thank you ma!!! And yes...it was...I was kinda pissed that I had to add all that science crap..but other than that..I loved doing it..😀

Mamita personally, Old School sound is what people starve on, whenever you come to the Bronx, the only Freestyle that's being played is the old-school. I think that the artist should re-release their old hits, just like Star Wars did with their movie, and look what happend, they made money......Old School Freestyle can bring it back.....Just release the old hits with promotions to the communities that listen to it and it'll be back, I know some communities in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Spanish Harlem, and New Jersey.

Yeah but music and movies r different and if they were to re release freestyle classics not many people would buy cuz theyd have the originals (plus u cant tamper with classics even if it is to re release) or are not into it cuz no matter wut we have to face it freestyle is not in the mainstream and i honestly think that it is a good thing. do u really want freestyle to go pop cuz if it does everything will get played out and altered to meet the mainstreams needs and wants it wont be the way it is now. Freestyle is fine as is!

Old school freestyle is the best but there are some good hits in the new school freestyle songs as well

I know that everyone craves the way Freestyle was back THEN, but nothing is better than the original, and most likely, everyone has the original and wouldnt want to buy it all over again if the artists decided to re-release. We need new Freestyle Music..BUT...it has to have the same flavor as back then if you want the fans to support it..am I not right?

Exactly richie..and does these new hits have the same flavor as back then?

And, when an artist does re-release an old hit, some people bash them, or look down on it. I personally don't mind a re-release, but I'm not naive enough to think remakes will keep freestyle alive. However, I do think that bringing back an old song, introduces it to a new audience who may have missed it, especially to the younger fans out there. So by exposing the genre to a new fan base so to speak, that will help it to grow.

Ya know, thats true meg...A lot of people always bash when theres a remake to an old hit, because they feel that if artists wanna come back, they should make there own stuff, and not remake one..Plus, it may not go newhere..But I personally think its cool, as long as they are doing more than that 1 re-make..Id really like some new Freestyle..But when I say NEW freestyle..I mean new songs with the same flavor..not songs that are more dance than how it used to be.

I hear you on that. But I mean look at all the bashing Johnny O got when he did his new album and had the remakes. But when he performed at DNA, people were talking and those that hadn't caught it the first time around, were getting into it. And granted, the album does have more of a "dance" feel than that freestyle sound, but still, at least its new songs and he is reaching a bigger audience. Well maybe not bigger, but getting exposer. And I know TKA got bashed for the "Forever" album, because of basically the same reason, and people said they sold out, etc etc...but the main thing is, these artists still go out and perform. And they still get the audience going...the crowd loved TKA last night, and everyone was pumped. But I hear what you're saying. The old flavor of freestyle is what needs to be in the new songs artists have.

~Meg~

Well ma, when I said the old flavor needs to come back and that thats the only way the fans will support, its the truth! Like you said with people bashing Johnny O and TKA for having a new sound..As you can see..the fans will NOT go for NETHING that doesnt sound Freestyle to them as it did back then. I Love TKAS Forever albulm and Johnny Os..but you see..thats for you and I and some others who arent picky with sound..LOL!

But in both those cases, it was made clear by the artists that the new albums weren't going to be purely freestyle, so when I brought them, I wasn't EXPECTING it and then complaining it didn't sound freestyle. But as you said so yourself, a se;ect few love the albums, because we understand the concept, and are just excited to hear the new material. And also, can't fault the artists completely because you know record companies have a say and all. And also it's not just artists subjected to it...dj's too....because freestyle isn't in it's hayday anymore, playing only that at clubs will basically end your career, and the demand for you won't be that high. That's why my friend had to move on to a biger genre and play house and techno...that was the demand....but he has also played tracks off the "Forever" album, and the crowd seems to love it. Not saying that alone will convert all to fans, but hey maybe it will get them interested enough to realize they were there before and plan to be around for awhile.

Yes, Freestyle has changed over the years.

For the most part, it has been for the worse!

I believe rhoq..u said that same exact thing when I posted this like 7 months ago in Freestyle Talk..LOL!

And yeah meg..I know...all we can do..is wait for some one out there, to give what the fans want...

A THOUGHT...
starting in 95 as new school electro or "breaks" in simple form, all these records had beats lifted from classic freestyle records. i believe that planet soul's set you free fever mix contained the beats from coro's where are you tonight. take away these new techno-y elements and weird s@#t, and what are you left with... plain freestyle beats. add some soft synths, and a hot voice, bang freestyle a la old school!
its not that difficult to recreate the sounds of old. and if there were a revival, thats how it should be done. dig out all the old analog equipment and reel to reels and throw down some killer beats.

in my personal opinion, freestyle can never be what it used to in the 80s and even early 90s (91). i feel that all the cheese that got pressed to try and sell a freestyle record was its demise.
IMO again, vocals are the key element. if they suck, get someone else to sing it.

AND ENOUGH WITH THE BLOODY PLANET ROCK BEAT ALREADY!!!

maybe the originators need to come back for a bit, and show some newbes how its done.

if all freestylers would express their opinions, here for example, that they wish to have beats of old, and maybe singers or producers are here reading this, wouldnt WE then be "a market"? in which the people putting money into studio time and RECORD (cds suck) pressing could see that there is a demand for it so the risk would not be so high.

say even there was a website like this devoted to new freestyle by a specific company who are forking out the dough. they feature sound bites of the tracks and if you want them, you buy them online and have it shipped to your door. i think it could work.
your clientele is the WWW where possibilties are worlwide and endless. there would be no discrimination that "this city doesnt have a freestyle following so we wont ship any of our records there".

if i had known how scarce (here in toronto, canada) freestyle would have become i would have bought every record ever released in the freestyle section at vinyl shops. here there is no such thing as a freestyle section anymore. :-(

i personally love getting records in the mail. its exciting!
remember those little cards in the metropolitan records sleeves, i wish that i had ordered from them. i wish i had known that all those titles were available right up until 1997 :-( cuz i missed out on some.

think about it

If it was for the worst, then you know that the Old School should be changed, I played Freestyle to some heavy Rap heads and they even said that it's groovey, know if Rap heads is sayin that and there not the type to get all luvy-duby, then that tells you something. Re-release is basically needed so that Old School fans that dont have the CDs, cuz it's hard to find, dont have N E excuse now, and it'll attract new and young fans. I think Freestyle was always remain as a club scene rather than pop, so with that in mind, Freestyle would be unique and street dance-core for the fans
