This is just an idea, but something I think will benefit everyone. Many people are complaining lately about the current state of freestyle music. Although we can't please everyone, I do think there are issues that need to be worked on. It is time to push aside that I don't think that will work attitude and all of us as a whole discuss what we think does work and how to build upon it. I wrote this in another thread:

I have been aware of many of the problems facing this genre of music and I think that it is time that the New School artists all get together and have a New School artists conference to discuss and learn more about the business aspects of music. I know there are many agencies such as ASCAP that hold conferences to help us understand about royalties, marketing, etc..... and think that us as a community should try and set up a conference where we can all learn as well as discuss the current issues that are affecting freestyle music. Anyone that is interested send me a private message and let's see if efforts can be made to get the ball rolling. There are other conferences held that allow us to showcase our music and make contacts, but none of which discuss the freestyle industry in general. Other genres have these conferences, why not us. It is about that time and everyone should lend a hand to make this happen. If we can come together as a community to perform at different events such as the Wild Palm show and the Beach Bash, then we should also concentrate on coming together to help out our industry. You wanna help freestyle, this is our chance.

Peace,
Manny

Manny,
A community would also imply the support of the Freestyle Fan base.
As a FreeStyle fan I have written and made multiple request on radio shows requesting A Freestyle format to no avail. If you have any Ideas being a recording artist on how the fanbase can show further support please advise, I'm sure Freestyler would be more than glad to put forth the effort. Especially If it means we would finaly see Freestyle go main stream.

I'll be speaking on a production panel at this expo...if you wanna know more about Royaties,promotions,marketing..and how this business works in general...Attend this function...it's not really a freestyle event..but you'll still learn alot from the folks you meet.....you'll be glad you did....Email them for more info....and tell them i Reffered ya!!

Great idea Ted, I think this will be a great topic to discuss at the conference. We can have a panel of fans who will be willing to look for solutions and put them to work. The only way to look for solutions is through unity. What better way thatn to have a conference. It will give the fans not only the opportunity to meet the artists but to help us find solutions on what we can do as artists to better service you as a fan, and what the fans can do to help our music. Thanks for your concern. Edwin, a conference of the type you are speaking about is exactly what we need. I think it will be a great idea to put something like that together on a d ate where everyone can be available. I hope that all the sites can help on this issue.

Peace,
Manny

Manny,
Do you thing this is something that should be taken to the Velvet Room and Just keep the fans updated. It sound like the First part would be to get the Artist brought up to speed on Contract issues, not sure if the fans need to know those details.

SPEAKING AS AN OLD HEAD WHEN IT COMES TO FREESTYLE AND THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IN GENERAL, I BELIEVE I HAVE EXPERIENCED ALL THERE IS TO ON BOTH SIDES. I FOR ONE WOULD INSIST ON BEING A SPEAKER AT THIS EXPO.
I CAN TELL YOU MY EXPERIENCES AS A PRODUCER AND A DJ WHO BEEN SPINNING FREESTYLE SINCE THE BEGINNING AND I CAN TELL YOU ABOUT HOW THE MARKET HAS CHANGED AND WHY FREESTYLE NIGHTS AT CLUBS FAIL TODAY.
I HAVE MANY LEARNING EXPERIENCES I CAN TEACH OTHERS AND I DO THINK WE CAN BENEFIT FROM THIS EXPO. I REMEMBER GOING TO THE WMC WHEN IT WAS ALL FREESTYLE MUSIC AND WAS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL GUYS GOING TO IT AND NOW THEY DON'T INTEREST ME WITH WHAT IT HAS BECOME ( A SPRINGBREAK POOLSIDE PARTY) ,I AM SURPRISED THAT MTV HASN'T BEEN THERE YET!

DJ LegendPhilly,
I couldn't agree with you more. Think about how great it will be to have a panel of people such as Edwin Ramos, Willie Valentine, Artie Rodriguez, Chris Barbosa and Glenn Guttirez be able to say,Just examples) I am an artists, this is what I need, this is what I need to learn. Then have them give you advice and be able to listen to there success stories. How inspiring that will be. It will be a chance for the new school and old school to go to school and learn. You can come home and be able to apply something that will help your career and not just another show or big party. We can do that afterward LOL. This can really be a great opportunity for all. It will be great to have everyone in the industry as a whole involved such as djs, record label executives, producers, artists, fans, club owners and promoters, booking agencies etc...Let's make it happen!!!!!!!!

Manny, I agree with what you are saying and I would love to help out as much as possible cuz Minnesota Residents never heard of Freestyle Music, only if their are from somewhere else. Freestyle is not ending, it just started with new ideas and music. We just need to get it heard in the right ear, I have been working with my Uncle who owns MTV and other companies, we are trying to get a show for just old and new school Freestyle Music. But their are hardly any music videos to air. I can't do this alone but I know that if we come together as a Freestyle Community, we can accomplish this. I know it will take alot of time to get it out there, but we will succeed in getting this out... PM me, Manny if you need more infor on what I'm working on.

Angelus305,

It will be great to have you and MTV as part of the team. I agree that Freestyle does need to tap into other multi-media outlets such as vidoes in order to become a competetive force in the main stream music industry. It is a great genre of music with a huge fan base which has the opportunity of becoming the "next big musical trend." As we all know, music evolves and people are always looking for new sounds. This is definitely a chance to take freestyle to other media outlets where it hasn't been pushed to at a main stream level. Thanks for your support and I will be contacting you soon.

Peace,
Manny

On behalf of those who don't want to say anything regarding your idea of taking this to the "Velvet Room", I feel that what Freestyle can and will benefit from is the fans. No other contributing factor out there can really make the impact except for the fans.

So, what I'm getting at is this: What's the point of the Velvet Room? Leave it out in the open. Let us decide what needs to be done, and not done, with Freestyle. Let "us" be part of the panel. Look at the state it's in now. I think everyone can benefit from the ideas of those that really have no say, but "they" know what sells and gets a crowd going.

MAYBE HOLD A CHAT ROOM FOR A FREESTYLE CONFERENCE ONLY ON A DAILY BASES( BI-WEEKLY OR MONTHLY) SO WE CAN KEEP TRACK OF PROGRESS AND MAYBE PUT A GRADE ON EACH MONTH AS WE MOVE FORWARD.

CF is much like a ongoing conference. This is why the site was built
to help freestyle by uniting artists/fans & industry leaders in one place.

Without big names and big players, How would a physical conference help freestyle?

Jack is correct!! Back in the day, I say about 1992 we all (Myself, Carlos Rogers, Todd Terry, Albert Cabrera, Mickey Garcia, Sal Abbatiello, Aldo Marin, Carlos Berrios, Franc Reyes, and a host of other producers, remixers and promoters.) got together at the old Silver Screen night club in Astoria, Queens and had a sit down discussion about the future life of freestyle and what we needed to do to make it strive for more radio play and keep it alive on the streets. This get together was organized by Michael Schweiger who used to run Pyramid Entertainment. There were some heated discussions prior to this meeting at the Winter Music Conference in Miami that March. At that time the conference still had a freestyle panel. In order for us to have a legitimate conference again we must gather up all the old pioneers. As much as I love freestyle this is most likely not going to happen. After the big conference we had at Silver Screen Carlos Berrios then went back into the studio and created a whole new sound which was great; creating tracks for Corina (Temptation) and Lisette Melendez (A Day In My Life), etc. After that everyone started copying the same format as Carlos instead of building on his ideas and being creative; therefore, freestyle just faded out. It's up to the new schoolers and young guns to revive freestyle and put it back on the map. There are some good producers out there that have mad talent. They need to come to the forefront and show their skills. I really like Edwin Ramos's creativity and style. We need more people like him if we are planning on reviving freestyle.
Hollllllaaaaaa:blah

Good points Smoothie.. especially the part where you say JackG is right. lol

This entire concept is a great idea. Let's keep the ideas flowing.
Keep up the good work CF peeps & Manny, great idea.

Just to inform you all,

I wanted to put this in the velvet room and have pm'ed various people to try and get access and I haven't been able to. LOL Second of all the fans do need to be involved in this conference. And yes we will have some of the "old pioneers." This isn't about old school, new school, it's about going to school. Every other genre of music has these type of conferences, why not freestyle? We all need to learn about topics such as royalties, marketing, promotion, how to make money from radio play, what fans think about the current state of freestyle etc(just to name a few).....We have "old pioneers" and "new pioneers" such as Chris Barbosa and Edwin Ramos who are already interested in being panelist. Don't worry about big players LOL, These guys definitely have the big player status. (Bigtime LOL) They are just to name a few. We also have the support of djs, promoters, fans etc.....I am happy to see that an idea is given and that people are willing to execute it. Thank you to everyone here on CF who have contacted me and are willing to help and hope we can continue to make efforts to get this off the ground.

Peace,
Manny

MANNYRIV, I WAS FORMALLY A MEMBER OF THE VELVET ROOM AND THEN I WAS LABELED A DJ. I GUESS THE FACT THAT I HAVE 14 PUBLISHED WORKS UNDER MY BELT AS A PRODUCER/REMIXER AND NOT TO MENTION A RECORD LABEL, I GUESS YOU COULD SAY I SHOULD STILL BE IN THE VELVET ROOM. WRONG.
I AM NOT IN THERE ANYMORE BECAUSE I AM LABELED A DJ . I GUESS THE FACT THAT I AM CURRENTLY MASTERING A FREESTYLE ALBUM FOR SOME PHILLY ARTIST AS A PRODUCER/ENGINEER, AND ALSO WORKING WITH OTHER ARTISTS AS A PRODUCER WITH NEW MATERIAL FROM SCRATCH FOR A BETTER SOUND, WHO KNOWS , MAYBE,JUST MAYBE WE CAN GET MORE DONE IF THE PEEPS WHO KNOW THIS BIZZ ARE THE ONES RUNNING IT (LIKE ME FOR EXAMPLE).I AM NOT CHANGING FROM MY ROOTS FOR THE SAKE OF A ROOM OR A CONFERENCE, IF IT HAPPENS, I WILL GO UNDER MY NAME AS A DJ AND NOTHING LESS. I HOPE EVERYONE ELSE DOES THE SAME BECAUSE I WON'T JUDGE YOU BY YOUR NAME!
SEE YOU AT THE CONFERENCE IF IT HAPPENS

DJ Legendphilly,

Thank you for your support. Please e-mail me @ mannyrriv@aol.com.
I would love to here some of your ideas for this conference.

Peace,
Manny

hi

i like jack G idea and view point. but i think manny is right. right now as they say the iron is hot. theres a def dance frenzy going on right now and hip hop is on the ropes and on the run.

we are def looking better than we were 90 through 96. when freestyle was no where ! to be found.

but i think manny's view is a good one. frrestyle nearly? vanished in the eraly nineties.

now only Only cause Ktu is around. is it being played.

but you guys need to """"visualize"""" pronto !! what would happen if KTU went off the air again??

It could happen cause it did in 88. and switched from 103 to 97. and we all know what happen next !

look in any case. what we need is a very strong fan base and community leaders. like manny

in the prefroamnce business. with fans like us. acting at the lower core ""back bone"".

as the organizers the word spreaders. etc,.

but ive said this before and i'll say it again. we need to organize all our singers into a assoscation if there isnt one already.

and next our hard core fans into and orgnization. then those guys in cordination with the singers.

can spread freestyle around. but people like manny have to take the lead. !!!!

period!!

cause people like me and other fans are in the dark with music business. but once people like manny and jack g and others along with the singers take the lead.

create the conference. or the organization. we the fans can back you up with anything,.

example????

it could be as easy as creating the minnasotta brnach.

the miami brnach

the nyc branch

etc,. etc,.

and those branches report on the status of local output. like freestyle isngers getting booked or not. how many people at the club etc,. stuff like that.

and then once we get an idea an idea of local out put we can get feedback,.

and then change things here or there.

but like i eekp saying and i'll keep saying it.

freestyle is a small but very tight group., and it very rezliant cause we surivived through the hip hop years 90 through 96. till ktu came back on,.

anyway we ot to turn freestyle into what disco became. and that is that it never stops geting played. regardless of ''interest"".

cause it has a 5 or 10 million solid core folliwing etc,.

so any thats what we got to aim at,.

a singers orgnization first,. then branches ,. then local branch officers,. members,.

then output surveys ,. then feedback from the crowd,.

etc,.

then just throw water on it and let it grow
