It’s been three-fours of the year into the Freestyle scene and what many of us were hoping to be a new beginning for our music has turned out to be a double edge sword. The past few months have been very disappointing (lack of new releases) but at the same time very inspiring as radio (even though it is satellite radio) is taking a new interest in our artists, a great deal of new talent (4-Ever, Angelino, Anthony Gitto, Nina Martinez, and Isabel) has surfaced as well as the return of a few of the forefathers of our genre (Cynthia, Gioia, Exo, Betty of Sweet Sensation and Willie Valletin), and due to technology, fans have been able to communicate in ways never before possible (Ring tones).

On the surface one would think that these events (Copa, Spirit night club and Carmello’s annual Park concert) would bring us all closer together and unite us as a dominant force that would make the industry take note of our artists and music. Some of the “issues” that have been dominating discussion groups in our community the past few weeks’ makes me wonder: Where we really are?

I use the internet to keep abreast of the general “vibe” of fans and spend a great deal of time surfing in and out of many, many sites and bulletin boards to view firsthand what the fans are felling and looking for. In addition, I hear a great number of fans from all over the country that have a pretty good idea of what the general feeling on the streets is toward Freestyle. It seems that the past few weeks there has been more negativity about artists (Cynthia, Judy Torres), new material and the industry in general.

Now hold on, before you totally tune out, try and read on with an Open Mind. The reason that I was drawn to Freestyle was that this music and this community (Latin Freestyle, Club Freestyle, Freestyle Music, Freestyle File, NHB Freestyle etc..) had (and still has) a positive feel to it that I have seen in no other genre. The music is pure; the artists are real (not manufactured by some marketing department) and the Fans are passionate (at least until recently).

It seems that lately people are more interested in using public sites to post dirty laundry, to get even with each other, to trash industry icons that have done nothing but help Freestyle grow and get on national radio and to rip apart the efforts of any artist or industry supporter. Do Not Get Me Wrong Here. I am not saying that every project deserves props or that some of the issues are not valid. However, I do feel that the way that these things are being brought to light is putting a very negative spin on what we are all trying to accomplish. Using public bulletin boards to post harsh comments about industry happenings and rip apart the work of artists is very bad for everyone. Much of what I have read has not been verified and could be considered are slander. Many industry veterans have been recently attacked for their actions and opinions (I use the word “Attacked” because many of the comments have been very aggressive). Why would anyone want to be so harsh to people that are devoting a lot of time and energy to our music when so very few in the industry are willing to work for the progression of Freestyle?

As fare as comments about new music goes, I know that there are a lot of projects out there that aren’t up to par and agree that we should share its info but do we really have to be so fierce in how we describe it?
Remember, these artists are people and their work is very close to their hearts sol please respect this when reviewing them.
In addition, much of this info is not only seen by our community but, many others as well and when thins are dominated by overly aggressive comments (many times resorting to profanity and personal attacks), it gives a very unprofessional impression of everything that we are about.
Constantly I am hearing and reading that our music doesn’t get the respect that it deserves, but I ask you, from the recent activity of our community, do you really think that we deserve it?

Anyone that puts forth an effort to promote gets accused of “Cashing In” and taking advantage, radio station people that play the music get accused of “Payola”, and reviewers get slammed because they won’t spend their time writing negative things. I know that I am going out on a limb here expressing “not only” my opinion and expect a lot of backlash because of it, but Freestyle is near and dear to my heart and I am very concerned that we are all getting away from what really brought us together THE MUSIC!!! Speaking of which, let’s get on to the really important stuff, we only have three more months to go before the New Year, so lets make it a great one and keep the music coming, Good or Bad.

Peace

First off much of what you wrote about is dead wrong. Nina Martinez isnt even a freestyle singer even though she did release one song. The Shows at Fever had been awesome sell outs with over 5000 people going to each show but what is bad about them is that Sal A doesnt put on the new acts. But the reason he doesnt is because he feels taht most of them are not talanted enough (these are my words not his words). Caramellos Show case was a disaster not from the artests perspective but because of the lazy ass fans who didnt bother to show up. Even thought regular radio isnt picking up on Freestyle Satellite radio and sirius in particular is willing to take the chance. I will dare say 99 % of the new school acts even though as people are very likable but the truth is they arent good enough to get signed to contracts. To be good you need to be able to sing and also have a great stage presence. Right now sirous Remix is playing a canadian freestyle song called "Lucky Star" By Prima Donna. Way to GO DJ Rob Wagner of Remix 62. In regards to the old school singers they are still legends but dont tell me Judy Torres song was that great cause it wasnt. It was decent but wouldnt get time of play back in the day thats why it sank quickly on party 105 chart. Plus to get the music back u need to draw the kids and teens in and some 40 year old balding fat guy isnt going to do that. We need to be hip and fresh again. The future stars of this music is and i will say it is Ayna, Ashley, Abby, Manny and Jennifer Glass so far from what I hear from industry peeps and the streets. I am a true supporter going to most every event i can from the street fairs in the ghettos to Front row of Beatstocks. ANy comments Just email me.

I just read this post...Thanks for the kind words FreestylePete. You give me motivation! Seriously, it means a lot for an artist to read postings like yours and I appreciate all the support you have given me and my music. I'm still working hard on finishing my full length CD and should be releasing within the first half of '05.

Much love to all the supporters of artistic expression,
Jennifer Glass

Yes lots of negitivity in the community, but lots of positivity as well. The truth is this genre is in trouble. its no secret that it has died down a bit. The Positive side ...people taking action and doing something about the state freestyle is in. The negitivity....the on going rejection and turn downs from new releases. But hey, if it aint what the doctor orderd, what can you say?

Understand that music is now corperate. "THEY" decide what gets played on the radio, they decide what is hot, etc. They have profeshional researchers working around the clock to deliver the latest trend and hottest new sound to todays youth. KEY WORD "YOUTH" they dont care what 40 year olds want to hear.

Thats what freestyle is up against. We have to deliver a package and make enough noise for thease researchers to say, "HEY!! WHAT THE HELL IS THIS FRESH CRAZY SOUND, THIS IS BANGING!!" Until then we "Freestyle" will remain Independent and low budget.

We need peple to come togeather, and get back in the game! No one is really picking up whare our forfathers left off.....Maybee a handful of producers but that wont solve our crisis.

LIke I said a million times, Play it loud, and play it every whare you GO. It will spread like a wild fire. This top secret society stuff aint gonna cut it. We have to represent like the rappers and head bangers. Thats just a small start. We also need to Target the Youth, They make the music world turn. So the next step is developing a sound they can get with....and so far we have fired and missed almost every time. now I dunno about the East coast But Here In cali. Freestyle was still verey alive till around 98. Now keep in mind im speaking of more progressive stuff like The Angelinas, and Buffys....The stuff the Youth could Identify with.

We just need to pick up from there, and start rebuilding again. The more people get involved and continue to make new releases the more chances we have of making a lagitiment Come back . BOTTOM LINE. Just keep in mind we cant fire and miss any more. But if you here of a new release comming out but you dont want any thing to do with it.....Quit complaing about the bad shape freestyle is in, and for Gods sake Quit asking why freestyle is dead. It isnt hard to figure out , we are killing our selves. East Coast , West Coast, Canada , Germany, all releasing freestyle and getting dissed and rejected each time???? Well You do the math. And if you dont like whats been being released in the last couple of years , go buy a key beord and take some lessons, thats how this game works any wayz. To much talk and no action, and far too much negitivity.

Im working on a LP now, who knows. This could be the worse freestyle flop of all time, It could and might be the greatest freestytle LP of all time, But thats a chance Im willing to take because I want to die knowing. I fell in love with this music in the mid 90's and thought so highly of it ... I went out and bought my equipment and began makin freestyle...I was 19 yrs old going on 20 living in one of the worse enviorments a person can grow up in. I have "planet freestyle" tatooed on the back of my neck! Im not exsaturating. Please help, contribute, stay positive and open minded. start makin noise, its the only way we will survive.

I would also like to take the time to appologize for any negitive vibes I might have givven off on this site, And any one supporting this music weather its in the studio or your just a devoted fan buying the records. GOD BLESS YOU

If everyone here is like me, then we all 'feel' that the genre is going, or gone, extint. The thing that keeps us goin' is that we just 'don't wanna believe that it's dead, or dying' cause we still have lots of love for the music & we still have dreams of the great 'Freestyle Comeback'. I will always support Freestyle to the fullest. I wish there was more that I could do. I personally feel that freestyle can be dead to the world but it will always get play in my system. :dj
