First Of All, I Am So Happy To Hear That Mickey Garcia Is Gonna Bring Back Mic Mac, The Best Freestyle Label Hands Down, If It Wasn't For Mic Mac, This Site Wouldn't Be Here Today Because Freestyle Wouldn't Have Made It Anywhere Without Mic Mac, Now, Let Me Stick My 2 Cents In Why I Think Freestyle Died The Way It Did, The Reason Why Freestyle Died Was Because Almost All The Groups Only Put Out 2-3 Songs Then You Never Heard From Them Again, By Doing It That Way, You Lose The Fans, I'll Make An Example, I'm A Hugh Sports Fan, I'm A Die Hard S.F. Giants & S.F.49ers Fan, I've Been A Fan All My Life, The Funny Thing Is, I've Live In N.J. All Of My Life, I've Never Been Near The West Coast, But They Are My Teams lol, Anyway, Now To My Example, Say If They Had New Teams Every Week, Would People Still Love Sports, No, You Might Have A Hand Full Of Fans And Thats About It, Just Like What We Have Here Now On This Site For Freestyle, Thats Why The Groups In Freestyle That Made LPs Were The Ones That Everybody Knew About And Im Not Talking About People On This Site, I'm Talking About The Old Fans That Don't Follow It Anymore, I'll Give You An Example Using Mic Mac Singers, If Groups Like Tonasia, And More, Soave, Made Full Length Albums, I Bet Freestyle Would Of Had A Different Outcome Thats Why I Think The Best Chance Freestyle Has Of Making Any Kind Of A Comeback Would Be By Bring Back The Old Groups, Let Them Put Out 2-3 Singles Then Follow It Up With A Full Length Album, Then Repeat The Whole Thing Again A Year Later, By Putting New Groups Out For Every Song Wont Bring Back Freestyle, It'll Only Hurt It, Plus Those Cheap Ass Labels, I'll Use Nightmare Records For This Example, I Remember Reading Somewhere That Ashley's - Dont Let Me Go Single Was Getting Back Really Good Review's From Everybody, Then Why In The World Didn't Nightmare Records Put Out More Then 50 -100 Copies Of It Then, If They Didn't Have The Money To Put Out More 12inch Records, Then They Should Have Sold The Song To The Bigger Labels @ That Time Instead Of Bringing The Song To The Grave With Them, It's A Shame That Most Of The Old Freestyle Fans Dont Know About The Ashley, Latin Express, Mystie, Inferno, I Could Stay Here All Night Name You Singers LOL... Another Thing That I Think Hurts Freestyle Is, KTU, They Play The Same Songs Every Week, People Must Think That The Last Freestyle Song Made Was Tolga - Lovin Fool LOL, They Have To Try Any Mix It Up With Some New Shit, Or At Least Something From 96-99 Or Something, They Cant Go On Playing The Same Songs Every Week

Naya !! Please Help Him Understand

Naya, can you please tell Anthony that it had nothing to do with record labels putting out 2 or 3 singles and that their budgets were limited. He says that without Mic Mac this site wouldn't even be here. Anthony you haven't been around long enough to say shit like that. When freestyle was alive and well you were not even allowed in the clubs. Madd props have to go out to Aldo at Cutting and Sal at Fever just to name a few. "Little Louie" Vega, Todd Terry, Baby J, Manny Lehman, and I could go on and on about who really broke freestyle records in the clubs. Freestyle died because labels were putting out shitty records that were under produced with poor vocals. Let's stop kidding ourselves. If you don't like what KTU is playing then don't listen to them. They are going to be changing their format shortly anyway because their ratings are getting lower and lower. Trust me it's coming. I used to work there. Naya, please give him your input Mama !!!!

HIP- HOP got strong again and FREESTYLE couldnt compete. thats my theory. yes, the stuff coming out of freestyle was bad in mid 92, that helped put the nail in the coffin. again, this goes back to KAY'S THEORY, "DESTROY AND REBUILD". RAP went from disin other MC'S to "real life situations". FREESTYLE went from "LOVE" to....well...um...er..."LOVE" AGAIN.

well after my two singles, they put out an album, but I don't think it would have mattered, because KTU was well into the format change by then.
I have said it before, there have been millions of reasons why freestyle went down according to people, we will never pin point the one reason for it, because it was a culmination of things. I just hope that with all these new ideas, something hits, and we can get things started again. I have my fingers crossed here.

I thought the TKA reunion had the right idea. Most of those songs were filered house but there were a few slow jams and a few freestyle tracks. It was so that if you weren't a fan of freestyle, or had never ever heard of it or TKA, you could still feel it. It was all for all different types of audiences but still had a little freestyle on it. But it's too bad not enough fans were with them on their change I think the word freestyle has to just fade away. It's a dead weight added on to the artist that makes it that much harder in an industry that's already hard to make it in. I think Lisette tried this same formula with the "Imagination" cd, which was one of the best albums in '98 in my opinion. But again, the fans didn't really follow. She had the freestyle & breakbeat with "Time Passes By", "Make The Way", and "Forever" and the rest of the album sorta fell into a contemporary urban jazz vibe. It was a very good album once you can accept the fact that its not all freestyle, GET OVER IT! Freestyle fans are some of the most dedicated but also the most hard to satisfy. A good artist reinvents themselves with every album because 1. they have learned & changed in the time that has passed, 2. to keep the fans just as captivated with them as they were with the last album. Look in all the genres that are lucrative, legendary artists like Janet Jackson & Madonna do a total 360 with every album. Last year R&B saw it's favorites like Aaliyah, Usher, Faith Evans, & Ginuwine all also making drastically different follow up albums that were more mature and totally to the left of their previous albums. You had the bubblegum pop artists like Britney Spears & N Synce hooking up with hip hop producers to crossover into a genre with more longevity. In all these examples, the artist changed and the fans followed so they had success. The same thing should be allowed for a freestyle artist. To try new things, re-invent, and change.

Naya, let's be realistic !! you and I know that it's not going to happen as much as we want it to. There are tons and tons of compilations out there with your songs and others that are out there trying to make a dollar. The Hip Hop industry has taken over the airwaves and become a multi billion dollar industry. I know that freestyle is in your heart; but Mama you must hit other markets if you really want to get paid. No disrespect to Freddy over at Eli Records but I think your past that. You are already an established artist that has been there and done that. All of us are still waiting for the Ayna record to come out which was due out last year. We are all get too old for this shit and must change as the industry changes. Did you read Anthony's comments above ????

I know it won't happen like it did before, because freestyle has to go into a new direction, that's fo rsure. I heard Ayna's song is coming out this week, not sure though.

People, Remember, I Said My Opinion, I Didn't Say Facts, Smoothrhythm, Did I Say Anywhere On My Post That I Listen To KTU, No, As Far As Being Too Young, Do You Know Me Because I Have No Idea You U Are And As For The Clubs Go, I Guess All The Money I Sent On All Of The Records I Bought Back Then Means Nothing According To You LOL, You Have Your Opinions And I Have Mine, You Make Great Points And I'm Gonna Respect Your Opinions And Not Be Like U And Act Like I Know Everything, But As Far As The Whole Mic Mac Thing Goes, I Still Feel Strong About That, I'm Sure If You Ask People How They Got Into Freestyle, Most Of Them Will Name You A Group From Mic Mac, I Remember Back In The Day With Hot 97, I Would Say 65% - 70% Of The Songs They Played Was From Mic Mac.
Nyasia, You Make A Great Example, Tell Me, What Year Did Now And Forever Come Out And What Year Did Your Full Length Album Come Out, By The Way, I Really Really Love Your Stuff 🙂

Anthony, I'm not trying to come across like I know everything but I've been in this industry and around a lot longer than you have. As for Hot 97 I used to work there when Mickey Garcia from Mic Mac used to come up to the station to see Steve and Joel to get his shit played on the radio. Just ask Naya where all her royaltie monies are. I'm not going to get into the politics of it all but if you were behind the scenes to see what a freestyle artist that was signed to Mic Mac had to go through you would understand. O.k. I should not be singling out Mic Mac; that's not fair my badd Mickey. These freestyle artists to this day are still hustling to make $500-$1500 a show and still do promos for certain promoters. Perfect example take Beatstock 2002 for instance; I guarantee that all the freestyle acts that perform will be promo for KTU. It's a damn shame and our freestyle artists deserve better. There were other independent labels that played a vital role in putting freestyle on the map. They were Cutting Records, Fever, Warlock, Tommy Boy and the list goes on and on. One label didn't pave the way for everyone else. It was just one big melting pot that was full of love and beautiful people.

DAMN!!! Is it like THAT??? Cynthia better be getting way more than that. Or im gonna have to come up there a ruff up some promoters!😛

Pay da girl gotdammit!

Yeah Kidd, it's a damn shame isn't it. This is one of the major things that keeps them going. Most of them have day jobs just like us.
The royalty shit just ain't happening.

One thing I can’t stand is when someone that think they know it all talks about something they really don’t know anything about.

Just for the record smoothrhythm, You worked in radio and not at any of the offices of a record label and I’m sure you do not have the slightest clue as to all the money’s that are invested in making these records. When you say ask Nayasia about her royalties, I take that into offence that you mean she was ripped off by MicMac. Well buddy, I would watch what you say to others without knowing the real deal… The music business and how it really works. Stick to what you know and don’t talk about what you don’t know.

That is slander and I would be very careful what I say if I were you.

By the way, Nyasia was signed to a production company and the deal between her and MicMac was done with her production company. If that production company never received any money from MicMac, Then why did they deliver follow up material? You go figure. And about me going to radio to get music played, I always had an employee that handled radio at that time. His name is Ray Caviano. I went to Hot97 I believe maybe once when they first came to the scene and there offices was in queens.

Let me say that record labels invest money into an artist by way of advances to the producers, artist, studios, photo sessions for album covers, video, flats etc. and all this money has to be recouped before an artist sees the first dime.

Freestyle music diminished and faded away for a bunch of different reasons which I refuse to get into but I still believe that it never went away completely. It’s still present even at radio today but ill just say one thing why I know for sure that the industry is not excited about working with people in freestyle.

IT’S BECAUSE OF ALL THE BULL / GOSSIP / CRAP / THAT PEOPLE AND SOME ARTIST(S) LOVE TO TALK ABOUT WITHOUT KNOWING ANYTHING!!!

IF EVERYONE JUST DID THEIR JOBS AND MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS, MAYBE IT WOULD BE STILL AROUND LIKE THE DAYS OF HOT97

Thank you for reading this.

Doubt it very much !!!! No disrepect Mickey but I never said that Mic Mac ripped off Naya. There was lots of wheelin and dealin going on and you know what I mean. I'm not going to get into it because the CF people don't need to know. When I run into you I clear up what I'm trying to say. Record labels were putting out shitty records that had poor vocals and the productions sucked. Some record companies; I'm not mentioning any names put the shit out anyway. that's what killed freestyle and the lack of artist developement on the labels behalf. Radio didn't help either !!!! By the way I worked for Arthur Baker at Criminal Records so I've been around.

I am new to this site but have been a fan ever since i was a kid. I am no one to say, since i have very little experence with freestyle campared to most of you on this site, but i saw freetyle die. I have to agree with smoothrythme and kenny about what they said on how hip hop got big and freestyle couldn't put out. many companys have put out enough poorly produced freestyle cd's to drive away the fans and potential fans. If freestyle is gonna make a come back, then it might require more than just a year or two and allot of money for advertiseing and marketing. To many i know, here on the west coast, freestyle has a girlish image to them, maybe that might need to be change. but once again, who am i to say anything, im just giving my input, hopefuly for it might help. thanks for putting this site together and keeping freestyle alive for some of us.

Here we have people saying that record labels put out $hitty records w/poor production, but nobody is freakin perfect people. Do you think that if EVERY SINGLE RECORD was made and put out perfectly to satisfy everyone's ears, freestyle would be where it's at now??????????????????? Not every song is going to be excellent to make people happy. I used to love TAZMANIA, ARTISTIK, MIC MAC, I can go on and on and I still love my collection, but I have to say I didn't like every single song on these compilations, record companys are going to put out material that will not satisfy every fan so get over the fact that poor production and shit like that killed freestyle. HIP HOP is huge and it took over in every aspect of music. Don't down Freestyle and just be a Freestyle fan or don't be one at all.

Peace out,
Rick

OLD THREAD BUT AMEN TO THAT MICKEY...

Wow talk about your grave diggers...lol...2002 dammm....lol.....
I've been seen all these old threads being brought back, why is that? Let it go!
Let's worried about the rest of this year and 2006. Thats the problem with many of these threads they all talk about the past early 80's and 90's. Those were great years and good ones, but let's stop comparing and lets do something Useful, like recreating and moving on. Let's re-live the past in our hearts and when we talk, but not down grade and put down the people who trying to keep this going.
Alex of LN

Alex, you are so right bro. We can't bring back yesterday much less the 80s, we do need to look foward and support the artists that are keeping it alive today. Let it go people and just support.

Peace,
Rick
