San Diego, CA has a bit of freestyle history. Some of the artists who released recordings that came out of San Diego or had a San Diego connection were Tury Q, Frankie Boy, Felix, and Leticia. Leticia and Frankie Boy both signed with Ventura records in Canada (although Frankie Boy was put out under Backstage Records). Felix signed with Ten Lion records in Florida (and had a single put out under Magic Apple and Ten Destune). Tury Q put out a Cassingle and a 12" Vinyl single independently and eventually put out a record under Turntable records in Texas and Hot Apple records released an album with most of the same tracks. I was fortunate to be a producer and/or writer on some of their tracks. I used to record them at a home studio owned by a friend and former teacher and a music technology program's studio in a local high school. The recorder we used was a Tascam 688 porta studio. It had 8 tracks and we usually striped track 8 with time code to run all of the MIDI tracks in sync with the 8 track and put them directly down to DAT during mixdown. Leticia's track (Why Do You Treat Me Badly?) was the only exception as the music was done on a Roland U20 and Yamaha RY10 and mixed to DAT at my house. The instrumental was brought to the studio and put on to two tracks of the 8 track. On Felix (Don't Cry Over Him/ Leave It All Behind) and Frankie Boy's (My Precious Love) tracks, the microphones were teac pencil condensor mics that I haver never seen elsewhere (I loved the sound of them) and on Leticia's track I vaguely remember using a Shure Sm57 since the condensor was unavailable at the time. A girl named Agnes Llagas did the backgrounds on Leticia's track. She had an excellent voice and I was working with her as well but we never released anything. Frankie Boy did the backgrounds on the Spanish version of Leticia's track. Leticia, Felix and Frankie Boy all made the freestyle charts in DMA magazine. Leticia made it to #1 on that chart and also made the club play chart. I did one more track with Frankie Boy and another with Leticia that made it onto compilations but that was about it. Felix is working on new freestyle material at the moment. Last word from Leticia is that she has been in the studio as well. Tury Q is a radio DJ and Frankie Boy is still recording and doing well although he is no longer Frankie Boy. Oh, and I am still recording and writing as well. Congrat's you made it to the end of my post! Did I bore you??? Don't answer that!!!!!! :cheers

P.S. A group named Internal Affairs (If You Don't Know) and a singer named Gina (Time Will Reveal) also released freestyle material out of San Diego, CA or had a San Diego connection.
