The Expose' Curse!
Hey there Exotica and everyone else. Gioia's really tied up for the next week with shows in NYC, a trip to Chicago and next week Boston so I'm stepping in to answer so you don't have to wait so long.
I can't tell you how many times this question has been asked in interviews, on the G-Board (her message board) and in person. She is proud of her work with Expose'. Even though it was a long time ago, she's very well aware that songs like "Come Go With Me, Point Of No Return, Seasons Change, Exposed To Love, Let Me Be The One, What You Don't Know, You're Baby Never Looked Good In Blue", etc... hold special memories in so many hearts out there and is so thankful to have that history behind her. Losing her voice was devistating for both her and the group since they were at the height of thier careers. Gioia literally couldn't speak for 3 years! She was able to hum after 4 years...and finally get her voice back after 5 years. It was nothing less than a miracle because the docs all said she'd never sing again...not only can she sing but her voice is now stronger and her range even wider!!! By then Expose' was history and the labels and interest were gone. It's her fans that brought her back to sing again when she thought everyone forgot about her. She's forever grateful and does her best to meet as many people as she can at each show and online...she loves jumping into the crowd and meeting everyone face to face...it's her favorite part of performing.
As for Jeanette & Ann... Jeanette sings with a Jazz band in Las Vegas called "Safe Sax". She has a husband and kids now and is just happy with a simple life out there. She gets to sing and raise her family at home. She and Gioia spoke for the first time in many years a few months ago and they were so happy to re-connect. Last we heard through a mutual friend, Ann is in NYC and persuing private business endeavors. She's recorded some things here and there but to my knowledge, she's not really into performing anymore. Unfortunately, she hasn't been in contact with Gioia but Gioia hopes they'll get in touch someday soon.
As for reuniting...Expose', as amazing and record-breaking as they were, was a legal nightmare for the girls and everyone involved. One person owned the name "Expose'"...while another owned the rights to the songs...while the label owned their catalog...while the girls owned nothing. Everyone was suing everyone else and they were forced to perform sometimes while even in the middle of lawsuits...kinda like being forced to work with for you boss everyday while he's suing you at the same time. It was just a bad situation for them however the music was amazing, the experiences were amazing and platinum albums and videos speak for themselves. They broke records held by the Beatles and The Supremes yet you never hear them mentioned on countdowns or special shows featuring acts from that period of time....most likely due to all of the legal junk the group went through which we can only assume put a bad taste in the industry's mouth...we jokingly call this "The Expose' Curse".
I think for the right agreement, right money, and right venue the girls would get together again. Unfortunately, 10+ years later, who is going to put up the money and take the chance? It's people like you that brought Gioia back for us...thankfully she's even way better than she was back then. I met Jeanette this past summer and she looks and sounds wonderful too.....maybe Clubfreestyle.com fans can round up some kind of petition to the radio stations, promoters, labels, etc....to reunite the girls!!! With the right effort I don't think it's impossible!
