based on the movie i saw yesterday CRASH ..dealing with views on our "melting pot" society... state three misconceptions or stereotypes people may have of you and the facts following...

ill set the first example

stereotype:1

im a big mean looking puerto rican guy..i dont mean to be..my face just looks like that alot and I am told all the time that i look like either a bouncer..or a hitman..especially when im dressed up in a suit for work which is almost all the time...most people are intimidated by me when i first approach them..

fact:
im not mean at all..im a freakin clown..im big hearted and am more of a big teddybear then mafia muscle...im a romantic..i write mushy poetry..and have a beaming boyish smile when someone brings it out of me


stereotype:2

martial artist go around kicking peoples asses..most are bullies and show offs....

fact:

im a taekwondo practioner..have been since i was 12 years old..i never show off or brag of the things i can do how high i can kick how many bricks i can break..e.t.c.... in fact most poeple are surprised when they learn i am an instructor.. martial arts is a way of self discipline and self challenge more then learning how to dispatch ninja and druglords like bruce lee and jet li.. proper training brings self control..it does not produce bullies and thugs...

stereotype:3

most puerto ricans are on welfare or unemployment ..or have blue collar or manual labor jobs with menial pay and are lazy..and just like to drink and party

fact:

I am a sales professional for a major corporate company "verizon wireless" and very sucessful ...I work fifty hours plus a week and usally thats every weekend..as much as id like to..i dont have time to drink and party all the time..lazy is not part of my vocabulary unless "lazy" is sleeping on my days off from the exhaustion of working many hours

stereotype:1

That because I am gay, I am effeminate, and weak, and sleep around with other guys.

fact:

I can get very angry, if need be. I work out at Gold's Gym and am increasing my physical strength, as well as my mental strength. As for the sleep around part, I have to be dating someone for a while before I can have sex with them, if the caring/love isn't there, then the sex means nothing.

stereotype:2

That I am overweight because I am lazy.

fact:

I am overweight because I was depressed, and overate to compensate. Now that I recognize that, I am fixing it.

stereotype:3

Because I identify as a "Roman Catholic" that I am a religious zealot.

fact:

While I believe in God, and Jesus, and the 10 Commandments, I believe that gays are not sinners, that women have the right to choose, and people can practice any religion (or none for that matter) and still find their way to Heaven, Allah, Nirvana, or whatever waits for us in the afterlife.

lets be real .. it is our god given american right to label people based on the color of skin..gender..religion....sexuality..neighborhood they live..just kidding its not in our rights were supposed to be "taught" otherwise" but we do it everyday wheter we admit it or not.. if not for any of these comedians would be out of work..what would they have to write jokes about?? and while its acceptable to run down jokes on stereotypes on stage or in movies.. you say one wrong word in public and can sometimes actually set off violence..think about what makes the news every evening and how many of those stories are racially motivated?
 
Stereo type 1
Just because i love designer fashion,shoes,makeup,what most think is material things

They think i am stuck up,materialistic,that I must have money (wich is far from it )and think im to good or must have low self esteem to be into the things i am

Fact, I am confident I work hard for what i earn and sometimes i get some help but its never asked,I have a heart as big as the empire state building I will give the shirt off my back for someone else in a heartbeat.

stereo type 2
That I am a girly girl wich goes with stereo type 1 Just because i wear certain clothes or the way I carry myself they think I must be boring and superficial
Fact 2
I am into music I try to learn how to produce,edit,dj anything with music and gadgets
I am a singer with dream to make it ,,I collect records from way back into the early 80s I will go in to a record shop in heels and get stares like whats this girl know about music lol..Urrggg I will play a game of baseball with my son and run with him like a kid so just becauseI love clothes and all the girly stuff dont mean im some snob who dont like to get dirty or think..I am in school now getting my degree ..Thanks that wa sgreat getting off my chest lmao.
 
This was a very good thread because as you said we aer all faced with stereo types every day all my life people have assumed something about me and till this day do and it is so not true to most of the bullshit because they dotn know you they assume.

Ive been called shallow for liking certain brands of clothing

Ive gotten are been assumed to be conceided because I dont stop and chit chat with everyone who crosses my path.

Ive been assumed to sleep around because I am a woman and a Latina.

I was told I would get pregnant at 15 and amount to nothing.

I am 28 yrs old had my son at 27yrs old have a great job and well on my way to moving up in my industry.

I have been guilty of stereo typying but its society and the shit that is instilled in us as we grow that taints our outlook on things and other people I deff want to check out Crash because it touches on this issue. 🙂
 
Okay here are mine:

Stereotype 1:

Because I live in the Bronx and I am Latina I am a high school drop out with 7 kids...

Fact 1:
I am no high school drop out. I graduated from Pace University with a Bachelor's in Computer Science and a minor in Information Systems...I am currently going for my Master's in Information Systems...and I do not have kids...

Stereotype 2:
Because my family owns a private house in a block with a whole bunch of buildings and I have a car and I don't hang out with people from the block, they think I have money, I am anti-social, too into myself...

Fact 2:
Yes my family does have a private house...but they work really hard to get that house...I am not rich...If I was I wouldn't be living there...I am not anti-social or into myself...I don't have time to be hanging out...I work toooooo daymn much...as for my car...I got it by working hard!

Stereotype 3:
Since I am soooo nice to people, I am always joking around and laughing...there is no possible way I have a mean streak...

Fact 3:
Well I may be nice...and I would bend over backwards for you...I have a very bad temper...It's something I am aware of that is why I try to control it...believe me it's not something you want to see...
 
Hmmmmm well I've been thinking about this since I first read the thread this morning. Can't think of a damn thing. Maybe that's cuz I really don't care what people think about me. Either you like me or you don't. :lol It's no skin off of my nose so to speak. 🙂
