A Bethpage man who is a reputed Bonanno crime family captain pleaded guilty yesterday to charges of gambling and extortion in a case that grew out of the problems of a controversial Howard Beach homemaker.
Jerome Asaro, 49, faces a possible prison term of 33 to 41 months at his sentencing, now scheduled for Dec. 7. Under the terms of Asaro's agreement with prosecutors, the range of his prison term under federal sentencing guidelines may drop if Asaro's codefendants accept plea-bargain offers from the government by Sept. 28.
Asaro and 17 others were arrested in February in an investigation that stemmed from the alleged extortion of Yvonne Rossetti of Howard Beach.
The resulting investigation pulled in other defendants, including Anthony Rabito and Nicholas Santora - the Bonanno crime family's reputed consigliere and acting underboss, respectively - who are accused of conspiring to shake down Rossetti for $100,000.
Like Asaro, other defendants were charged with unrelated gambling, extortion or securities offenses.
In a brief appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kiyo Matsumoto, Asaro admitted that for more than 20 years he was involved in a gambling business and that between 2004 and 2005 he was involved in an extortionate collection of a debt from a victim identified only as "John Doe #10." He is free on $1 million bail until sentencing.
Rossetti and her husband, Vincent, who is a government witness, left their Howard Beach home late last year and are believed to be living out of state.
Yvonne Rossetti has been dogged by lawsuits and allegations that she bilked investors. She has not been charged with any crime.
