2 cousins hurt by N.J. duo
in PATH train attack

Two black gay cousins from Jersey City were pummeled with fists and slurs in the Ninth St. PATH station early yesterday morning - all because of their clothes, police sources said.

The cousins, ages 36 and 37, were waiting on the Greenwich Village platform for a train home at 3:40 a.m. when the alleged attackers, Joseph Campoli, 20, and Paul Scott, 19, confronted them about their clothing.

Campoli and Scott used anti-gay and racist slurs, sources said, then began throwing punches.

A witness called 911 and two Port Authority cops rushed down to the platform to break it up, a PA spokesman said.

Police sources said the attackers may have tried to throw the victims onto the train tracks.

The 36-year-old was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in stable condition after suffering broken ribs, cuts and bruises. His cousin suffered some bruises and was released from the hospital.

Police believe alcohol may have played a role in the attack. Campoli, of Manahawkin, N.J., and Scott, of Mayetta, N.J., were charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
