This weekend while I was in NY, I came across the new Armand Van Helden album, titled "New York: A Mix Odyssey". I have two words- Excellent album!
The track listing is highly impressive, mixing in some old with the new, while taking you back to where it all started. His skills are amazing, as he flawlessly mixes track after track....
1. Call Me - Blondie
2. Hear My Name - Spalding Rockwell
3. Three Girl Rhumba - Klonhertz
4. Watching Cars Go By - Felix da Housecat
5. Don't Go
6. (I Just Wanna Be A) Drummer - Heavy Rock
7. This Feelin - AB & Zu
8. Black Betty
9. Big Booya
10. Tainted Love - Soft Cell
11. Mymymy - Armand Van Helden
12. Talking in Your Sleep
13. Rocky XIII
14. Let Me Lead You - Armand Van Helden
15. Fascinated - Company B
16. Owner of a Lonely Heart
**In the liner notes, he mentions a few things about Freestyle, Electro, and the retro Punk Rock scene....
Track 14 was written and produced by Armand himself, and this is what he had to say about it: "I definitely wanted to go for that Freestyle feel that '84' feel but with an updated pump to it, kinda like old jellybean benitez mixed in with expose and toss in lisa lisa. forget electro clash, lets start the freestyle revival".- Armand Van Helden
Here is how Armand defines Freestyle: freestyle is a mixture of early arther baker and mantronix in a latin-electro-vocal-stylee......
The man is genius.
