its nice to see some overpayed players getting there ass kicked by porto rico now its greeces turn to beat them

GO GREECE

Can someone explain to me how a Common Wealth of the US is represented by itself as opposed to being part of the collective states, territories in the olympics.

It doesn't make sense that a territories, common wealths that belong to us get to compete against us. If that was the case, Mass and Virginia, and the Republic of Texas should represent themselves, right?

And the whole Dream Team concept is wearing off. The World is not afraid of THe US anymore. The US team is a bunch of big ego, High priced players who are mostly individuals in their styles. The US has no big outside/perimiter shooters. The Intl' game is mostly an Outside the basket game.

GoodNews, The US Women is getting it done. The Smacked Chezch Republic this morning.

This is acceptable as it is part of the treaties signed when US took over PR.
If other Commowealths (spells together Thank you!!) do not have this. Tough luck!!! hahahahaha

By the way, Hong Kong is now part of China and they still keep their Olympic Team, as so many other countries.

About Puerto Rico, we got some good #$%^ players!!!!!

Team USA trounced by tiny Puerto Rico
Americans outscored 28-7 in second quarter
By J. Douglas Foster, NBCOlympics.com

ATHENS -- No need to adjust your television sets.
Yes, the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team really did lose its Athens opener to Puerto Rico.
And it wasn't even close.

Puerto Rico won in a rout, 92-73, dealing the U.S. its first Olympic loss since NBA players were allowed to compete in 1992 and its third in Olympic history. The U.S. had won 24 consecutive Olympic games with NBA players since losing to the Soviet Union in the semifinals of the 1988 Games in Seoul.

Two years after losing three times to finish a staggering sixth at the 2002 World Championships in Indianapolis, the once-dominant U.S. stumbled again, suffering its most one-sided loss in Olympic play.

The key for Puerto Rico was the second period, in which it outscored the U.S. 28-7 and blew out to a 22-point halftime lead. The U.S. managed just three field goals and were outscored 14-3 going into the half.

Once behind, the perimeter shooting weakness that many predicted for this team became evident. With Puerto Rico backed up into a zone defense, the Americans could not get the ball inside to their best player, center Tim Duncan. The U.S. shot three for 24 (13 percent) on the night from 3-point range and missed 16 in a row at one point.

"We settled for jumpers, just the way they wanted us to," U.S. co-captain Allen Iverson said. "They had a good game plan and they knocked us off."
The Americans tried so many 3-pointers because their overall perimeter shooting was atrocious all night. In the first half alone, they had two airballs and one shot that hit the side of the backboard. And all three were uncontested.

Puerto Rico countered that with efficient offense on its end, hitting half its 3-point attempts (8-for-16) and shooting 56 percent from the floor.

Utah Jazz guard Carlos Arroyo did the most damage, scoring a game-high 24 points on a combination of 3-pointers, great halfcourt penetration moves and transition baskets. He also gave the Americans a bit of their own medicine with a slick ball-fake in the second, strolling past LeBron James for an easy basket.

"He just played well. That's the way it goes," Iverson said. "He's not in the NBA for nothing. Guys play hard and guys have pride, and guys have great games. Tonight he had his great game and we didn't have ours."

Equally effective was Eddie Casiano, who cameoff the bench to hit all four of his 3-point attempts on his way to 18 points. Two of Casiano's 3-pointers early in the second quarter helped open the lead to seven and start the breakaway run. Puerto Rico stretched the lead to 12 before closing the period with a 10-0 run that extended the lead to 49-27 entering the half.

Puerto Rico didn't budge much in the third, but did have to withstand a comeback attempt by the U.S. squad in the fourth. Six consecutive U.S. points, capped by two Duncan free throws, cut the Puerto Rico lead to eight with 6:11 remaining.

But Arroyo answered again, banking in a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 11. A traditional three-point play by Arroyo at the 4:25 mark put the lead back to double digits for good.

Iverson and Duncan led the U.S. with 15 points each. Afterward Iverson said the American team would not lose its confidence despite the defeat.
Puerto Rico veteran Jose Ortiz, who scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds, agreed.

"They're going to do some damage," Ortiz said. "I think they're not feeling well about this loss. I know they're going to bounce back. They are very proud players and they can do some damage."

The U.S. is 109-3 in Olympic competition.

Though the loss was embarrassing to the U.S., it doesn't preclude the team from winning a medal, or even the gold. The U.S. must still play the remaining four teams in its group in round-robin play. The top four teams out of six advance to the quarterfinals. So the U.S. could lose another game, maybe even two, and still emerge from its pool.

Once before, Puerto Rico challenged the U.S. in Olympic play. At the 1976 Games in Montreal, Marquette University star Butch Lee's 35 points nearly enabled Puerto Rico to pull off an upset. But the U.S. prevailed, 95-94, and went on to win the gold medal.

Well put Mike.....that's the key issue with the US Team.....Over Paid Players with HUGE EGOS.....they don't play like a TEAM, and that's why they are getting their asses handed to them. I would not be surprised at all if Greece beat them. I don't see the US Mens Basketball Team Medaling at all, and that's a disgrace!!!

Steve

Well, at least the women appear to be having no problem obliterating teams in their path to GOLD. I guess they will have to bail the Men out this go around.....LOL

3 Cheers for the US Womens Basketball Team!!!!

Steve

The whole world is speaking of the defeat

ESPN Deportes

"Carlos Arroyo grabbed the front of his jersey with two hands, preening the sweat-soaked Puerto Rico on his uniform for Dwyane Wade to stand there and see in the final minute of this historic happening. Arroyo had taken the hard fouls, the dismissive American attitudes and years and years of the United States treating his national team like the Washington Generals. No more, those blazing eyes insisted. No more."
Adrian Wojnarowski
ESPN

"...debemos darnos cuenta que somos un equipo, señalo el seleccionador de Estados Unidos. Porque esa es la única forma de referirse a su equipo, aunque todavía haya irresponsables que le llamen Dream Team."

José Ignacio Huguet
Mundo Deportivo España

"Puerto Rico spanked us so bad in men's basketball - the first Olympic loss for NBA players- that Larry Brown probably considered annexation at halftime. Beaten by the 51st state. The horror.

Mike Wise

The Washington Post

"Sunday night, Arroyo and several members of Team Puerto Rico apologized for celebrating a little too enthusiastically. "I know it looked kind of cocky," he said about emphatically pointing to his jersey toward the end of the game, "and I'm sorry about that." Arroyo, bless his Herat, did nothing for which he needed to apologize, unless he wants to whisper a little something to Stoudemire after making him look like a chump with a move to the basket early in the game. Arroyo is part of this new world order - a kid who grew up in Puerto Rico idolizing NBA stars, he is as good if not better than today's NBA guards."
Michael Wilborn
The Washington Post

"But you don't have to wonder if any team in the world will ever fear U.S. team again. They won't. They learned Sunday night they don't have to.
Mike Celizic
NBCSports

"This wasn't a wake-up call Sunday night, this was the reality of the USA Basketball. Carlos Arroyo grabbed his uniform, splashed that Puerto Rico name in the face of the Americans and his message was unmistakable; The rest of the world wans't just walking into the gym, and handling over their lunch money anymore."
