Just a little advice to all the ladies who use hormonal birth control. Make sure you read the side-affect and take the warnings very seriously. Report any side effects immediately to your doctor. I was on the Depo-Provera shot for 3 years after my daughter was born. My family's medical history should have been enough to keep me from taking it, but I did. After two days from the first injection, I broke out in horrible, painful hives all over my legs which I had for about 2-3 weeks. I still have a few scars from it. I started getting daily paralyzing headaches. Calcium was virtually sucked out of my body, which did extreme damage to my teeth and bones. Injuries before which would just cause me bruising was now breaking my bones. I was getting symptoms of a menopausal women, hot flashes and all. I gained a total of close to a 100 lbs. The only reason I kept taking it was because it just seemed so convenient and my ex really pushed me even though we hardly did anything anyway. Finally it was the headaches and the weight gain that got me to confide in the doctor about all my symptoms. I was immediately taken off the shot and told I'd most likely never do well with any hormonal birth control. She had said I was on the verge of having a stroke. There have been deaths reported from Depo-Provera and the patch, so ladies please take this seriously.

I've been on the patch for 3 years and I love it. Thank God I haven't had any side effects! I do know 2 people who did the Depo-vera shot and had horrible side effects. Everyone's body is different and reacts differently to medication. I agree, Dianita, you should report any side effects ASAP!

You even gotta be careful when taking the pill...that's the thing people are so blinded by the convience that they forget about their well being

That was me, I was so blinded by the convenience. There are many women who take well to it, but I was in that small percentile that had the real bad reactions to it. My sister did have bad reactions to the pill, but luckily not too bad. Here's a link to a 25-year old mom who died using the patch. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8565177/

I won't take hormnonal birthcontrol (pill, shot, patch) cuz of the risks I have a couple of minor health issues that may become more serious if I don't do well with hormonal birthcontrol...and to me it's not a risk worth taking

You have to know all the facts before starting on anything...

I just read the article you posted and its weird that the women who died were in the late teens or early 20's. I wonder how many of them were smokers too because alot of people don't take it seriously that smoking while using birth control can be a deadly combination!

I have been taking birth control (the pill) for about 3 months and I feel awful. I feel nausiated mostly everyday and I have missed my period...I am going to the Dr to see whats up but I think this is highly abnormal. I thought the pill would regulate not skip periods..I was always regular before..

I was on the pill for 5 years before I decided to get pregnant. I had no side effects of that either. Everyone else I knew that was on it had bad headaches. I've been very lucky. The only reason I didn't go back on it after I had my kids was because my memory sucks and I forgot to take it. With the patch, you just have to remember once a week!

Itala, I would def. go to the doctor because soemthing isn't right. Good luck.

The thing with depo is that is doesn't have estrogen like the pills do. people do take the the shot for convinience but in your case Dianita you should have never let it get to the point you let it. as soon as you felt the first symptoms you should have ran to your doctor. WHen we give the shot at planned parenthood we give people pamphlets with all the info as well as vocally warn them that all birth control have side effects. we give them all options and if something is not right with the birth control that they pick then they have to change it. we also take vital and weight with every pill check in other words we check to see if they have any significant changes in weight and blood pressure with every time they check in for pills. women are told to report any bad side effects and our doctor will change it. but its not just for pills it's also for the patch, depo, the nuvo ring. Everyone is different. not everyone will react the same to a certain type of birth control. That means what may work for me may not work for you. Dianita you had a serious side effect and should have went to your gyn immediately. I am glad that nothing bad happened to you. you were lucky. I hope you can find a contraceptive that works. if not condoms girl!

Caught between heaven and hell
well i just started taking the pill.. this is my 4th week on it.. the first 2 weeks i was feeling very nervous.. but now i feel fine.. my body is ajusting to it...
and for the first time i didn't feel menstral cramps.. i would have to stay in bed the first day of my period cuz it was so bad.. but i felt nothing .. and it's not heavy like it always is.. so i'm really happy for that...
and i'm hoping it won't last as long as it did b4... so i'm happy on that end...
but the one thing i am not happy with is that i weighed my self and i have not lost anything in this last week.. i don't know if it's cuz the pill or cuz of my period... so i'm going to wait and see what happens with in these next weeks..
cuz i know they say it is harded to lose weight when you are on the pill...
but other then that i'm pretty ok.. this is just my first month.. so i'm hoping nothing changes...

MY WORLD
I took depo for 10 yrs and now I'm giving my body a break before I go back on it or take something else. The only side effect I had with it was that it stopped my menstraution for a while.

I was on Depo for 2 years after my little one was born and I stopped taking it because I didnt have a period for the whole time I was on it. To most women that sounds like a blessing but it really freaked me out and I was afraid I would mess myself up inside or whatever from it. Since then I've had a tubal ligation done so I dont need to use anything.
