does anybody know how to produce freestyle beats? I want to learn how to make these types of a beats and I'm looking for some tips.. so leave ya tips! :)

When songs were made back in the day what were the dominant synths used? Or were they using true instruments? When I listen to George Lamond's "Withou You" I hear strings, bass, drums, perc, etc. Just wondering how were most of the songs produced.
