Post Dimi Interview

1-How long have you been singing?
All my life, but professionally about 5-6 yrs.

2-Freestyle as you know is not the most popular type of music presently, yet you still decide to sing it, why?
Because I like it and this is the first type of music I started singing professionally. It comes naturally now and itís what I do best, but Iím still very versatile, and you will be hearing me singing different forms of music, such as Euro and possibly R&B. This does not make me a traitor though, I still like Freestyle but I'm not limiting myself to only one thing.

3-We all know that the music industry is a tough place. Itís also a lot of work and stress. But if you can pick one thing that makes all these hard ships worthwhile what would it be?
I started singing because I love it and that's how I express myself best, even though thereís a lot of politics and stress involved with it too. At first I used to take other peopleís jealousy very personally, but now I've just learned to ignore it and do my thing. The thing that keeps me going is the smiles on my fansí faces when they hear my songs, that makes my job worthwhile. It makes me happy to see that my fans can connect to the way I'm feeling through my music.

4-We all have goals, what are some goals you have accomplished so far?
I've established some sort of fan base, which was a goal of mine when I first started singing. I've been on respectable labels within the dance industry. I've also made it on radio, even with my first song "With All My Heart" which made me pretty happy; I was only 16 when that song came out.
A-What is the next goal you are working towards?
Well, I have my own studio now, so I will be working on my own tracks as well as collaborating with other producers. I'll still be working with some of my past producers, itís just a lot better when you have your own studio, you can record anytime you want and you can put your creativity, not only in your lyrics or the style you sing, but in production as well.
B-What is your ultimate goal?
My ultimate goal is to one day be popular enough that I can touch the world with my music, not only a specific section.

5-Youíre young, freestyle is a type of music that was huge in the late 80s early 90s when you were a kid. How were you exposed to it?
I have older cousins that listen to freestyle. When I used to be around them I would always sing along to the songs and actually I would annoy my cousins because I would always sing louder than the song even though they were pumping it on their systems, I guess that's how I developed my loud voice...lol

[B]6-What do you think of the freestyle scene and support here in Toronto/Canada?
This is a touchy subject. Well, the support for freestyle in Toronto is alright, but I think that sometimes we like to see the American or foreign freestyle artists when it comes to concerts and events. I think this is because you can see some Canadian freestyle artists perform at local clubs, so when it comes to concert time everyone wants to see foreign or American artists, which isn't a bad thing at all. Canadian artists have more pressure on them by their own people (Canadians) to compare to the Americans, which really isn't fair.
A-Who are some of your favourite local artists and what are some of your favourite Canadian freestyle songs?
I've loved Joee since the beginning of time. I've had the chance to meet Zoe and talk to her a bit, she seems like a cool person and I wouldn't mind working with her again in the future. It was fun. Kathy Phillips is a cool person too; she's pretty down to earth which is what I like. I don't really have a favourite song; I just enjoy some artists music more than others.

7-Who are some well known people you have worked with?
Kathy Phillips, Alexia Phillips, Most people on the Planet Freestyle CD and Elissa and IDS (he's actually sort of like a cousin to me).
A-Who would you like to work with?
I met Rockell a few years back and she seemed pretty cool, I wouldn't mind working with her. Non-Freestyle I'm currently working with my best friend that is a rapper (whoever was at the Docks Oct. 3 knows who I'm talking about). He's not known now but he will be very soon and you'll probably see me right beside him. We have an R&B track that we're sort of working on right now.

8-Your singing/song style is very similar to that of the American freestyle that was popular in the early 90s, what do you think of American freestyle?
I like American freestyle and I did listen to it a lot when I was younger, and still do now. I guess itís had an influence on me but it was never consciously, it just sort of happened. My friends used to always tell me I sound like Lil Suzy, but it was never done on purpose.
A-Why do you chose to have a different sound than the Canadian Euro/Trance inspired freestyle?
Itís not something I really chose, it just came naturally. Itís my style and it seems to be working just fine, so I'll stick to it for now. I just do what I like, and what I feel in my heart. Iím definitely more of a leader than a follower.

9-In ďI Have DreamsĒ you seem to explore a different style. Is this the direction your music is going?
"I Have Dreams" is actually the first song I wrote, I wrote it about a guy that I was seeing at the time. I actually did that song a year and a half before it was released. My style is changing and growing as I change and grow as a person. I have matured enough now that I can write my own songs about my own personal experiences. It was a little harder to do when I was 16 because I was too young to have experienced love and heartache. Since I have now, I can write about it.
A-In your previous songs it seems more natural, in ďI Have DreamsĒ a lot of the vocals donít seem as natural (the stutter effects), which style do you prefer?
The stuttering has nothing to do with me at all; it has to do with the producers of the track. When I sang it I did it naturally like my other songs, but when the production was done, that's how it sounded. I did want this song to be a little different than my other songs just to show something unique, but I didn't really give any specific instructions for the stutters. I would actually like to know what the fans think of that.

10-You donít perform a lot, why?[B]
I don't want to be at a venue every week because than you just become too played out. Nobody would come see my performances if they've already seen me in every club in Toronto. I study human nature and its human nature to eventually get bored of something if itís always in your face. If the fans want to see a local artist perform more, then they should request it to the right people and it would most likely happen.

11-Can you name an embarrassing moment youíve had either at a performance, or while recording or something like that?
Well, when I recorded "Only One" I had, like, a day notice and I had a major case of laryngitis. I thought my career was over but for some strange reason everybody ended up loving the song. I can tell when I hear the track that I was sick but everyone else doesn't seem to notice it as much as I do.

[B]12-How did you get ďdiscoveredĒ?
Everybody I knew always bugged me and said I should pursue a career in singing, so I sent in a demo tape to Odeon Records and they loved it. I went in and sang for them live acapella, right there and then Chris Phillips wanted me to be on Planet Freestyle Vol. 3 which ended up being the first CD I was on.

13-Describe your style.
I think my style is pretty unique. I'm a laid back person and I think I'm down to earth. When I meet someone I like them to be as real to me as possible, I usually can smell a fake person from a mile away and I try to keep my distance. I like to dress comfortably most of the time; usually in the studio you'll catch me wearing something comfortable like track pants and a sweater or something. Some people describe my style as "Gina-thug" lol. I'm just a chilling person and I like to be cool and real with people. As for my music style I like most forms of dance and most forms of R&B and hip hop and some Reggae (Sean Paul is amazing). I would love to do a feature with him some day.

14-Do you write your own music?
I've started to write my own music.
A-Have you written for anyone else?
I've co-written a couple songs with a friend of mine.

15-From your songs which one do you consider your favourite or the best?
I like "Only One" because that is the song that was pumping in the clubs and in people's stereo systems. It was actually pretty funny; I was still in high school when I released that song. I would come out to the parking lot at lunch time and at least 3 cars pumping that song almost every time I came outside.

Fave singer---Mariah Carrey
Fave song---There's a light inside of me
Fave food---Fettuccini Alfredo
Fave color---Royal Blue
Fave actor/actress---Johnny Depp
Fave movie---Good Fellas
Fave pass time/hobby other than singing---Chilling with my closest friends
Worst habit---Trust too easily
Best quality---I had to ask someone about this one and they said itís my smile and that I'm outgoing
Worst quality---sometimes I can be a little Impatient
Words to live by---[B]"What goes around comes around." If you do good for someone it will come back to you ten times better. For example one day I saw a homeless couple on the street and I gave them $10.00 the next week I went to the Casino with my Dad and I won the jackpot on a slot machine which was pretty cool because I never win at a Casino.

Actually, I think that's one of the main reasons the track did so well (and why it's one of my faves). Because her voice sounds so sexy in that song. :drool

Dimi Interview

I originally wanted you to do my interview ask Ky and I think it would be more interesting now that you have an impression of me. I would be honored. No that wasnt sarcastic. No...that wasnt sarcastic either...****...

Keep in mind its not necessarily an introduction, even though it seems implied.

Whenever

or never

and stuff...
